You Could Win The Chance To Pay $1,500 To Test Google’s Glass!
Their futuristic glasses project may be “in flux,” but Google continues to push ahead, showing us they really are serious about putting a computer within an inch of the window to your soul.
So far this year, Google has held two developer conferences specific to this project, changed the name of the unreleased product, (it’s only called “Glass” now) and even sent one of their executives out in the wild to test this device in the streets of New York City.
In the spirit of “openness,” Google is now asking the general public to help them figure out what to do with Glass. The Android-maker is hosting an open application process to get these Glass glasses onto the heads of anyone 18 or older to help them “shape the future” of glass.
As if having the opportunity to wear these things before anyone else wasn’t enough incentive, Google has also come up with a clever name for the supreme early adopters: “Explorers.”
“We’re looking for bold, creative individuals who want to join us and be a part of shaping the future of Glass,” reads a Google post.
“We’d love to make everyone an Explorer, but we’re starting off a bit smaller. We’re still in the early stages, and while we can’t promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting.”
Though, despite their best intentions, the Explorer’s club is not so inviting as Google would like to think. Anyone 18 years or older living in the US can apply via Twitter or, no shocker here, Google+.
Google isn’t simply giving these things away for free, however. Should you be selected to be an Explorer, you’ll have to be sure to be in Los Angeles, New York, or San Francisco. Google is only letting these spectacles go to good homes, it seems, and wants to meet winning applicants one-on-one before waving goodbye to their latest product. It’s likely these applicants will have to sign non-disclosure agreements in these meetings.
Along with attending a “special pick-up experience,” those lucky chosen will also be responsible for picking up the $1,500 tab, plus tax.
It’s a clever bit of marketing they’re doing for this program, as well. To apply, visit Google+ or Twitter and state in 50 words or less what you would do if you had glass. Applications aren’t complete until their hashtagged “#ifihadglass.”
There’s no word yet as to whether the tag must contain the incorrect capitalization to be eligible to win.
Willing to go the extra mile to win the chance to buy a pair of these glasses? Google will allow you to include up to five pictures with your application, as well as a short, 15-second video. You’ll want to be sure to follow ProjectGlass on both Google+ and Twitter so they can contact you in case you’re selected.
“Last year we showed Glass to the world for the first time,” said Vic Gundotra, senior vice president of engineering in a Google+ blog.
“We’re developing new technology that is designed to be unobtrusive and liberating, and so far we’ve only scratched the surface of the true potential of Glass.
“Glass is still in the early stages, so we expect there will be some twists and turns along the way.“
There’s also a new video of Glass in action, this time with voice commands activated by the phrase “Ok Glass.” According to this video, Glass will be able to take photos and videos, start Google Hangouts, send text messages and perform searches, all (assumedly) with voice commands. It’s also been rumored Google is looking to open their own line of retail stores to sell these Glass glasses when the time comes, though the high-tech specs are still more than a year away.
