30-Second Cell Phone Re-Charge with Student's Winning Science Fair Project

An 18 year-old high school senior has developed a supercapacitor that can charge cell phones in 20 to 30 seconds.

Eesha Khare developed the supercapacitor, which can store lots of energy in a very small volume.

“The supercapacitor I have developed uses a special nanostructure, which allows for a lot greater energy put into volume,” she said. “It can charge very quickly, and it can last for 10,000 cycles as compared to batteries, which last for about 1,000 cycles.”

Her project won her the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award for $50,000, which she wants to use to go to college and continue making “scientific advancements.”

The supercapacitor fits into a cell phone battery; her inspiration was that her cell phone battery always dies.

First place in the competition, Ionut Budisteanu, a 19-year old from Romania, created a viable model for a low-cost, self-driving car, a model that could detect traffic lanes and curbs and the real-time position of the car, and would only cost $4,000. He won $75,000.

Henry Lin of Lousiana won $50,000, the same award as Khare, for simulating thousands of clusters of galaxies.
