Mayan Temple Bulldozed by Construction Company

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The main temple at Noh Mul, considered a major Mayan monument, has been bulldozed for roadfill by a construction company.

The temple, one of the biggest Mayan temples in Belize, was thousands of years old. The temple is believed to have been built with limestone bricks cut with stone tools in the BC era.

“The thought that this could be used for road fill is a manifest outrage and a particularly painful one for these archeologists who were called out to the area today,” reported 7 News Belize.

“This is one of the worst that I have seen in my entire 25 years of archaeology in Belize,” said Dr. John Miller. “We can’t salvaged what has happened out here – it is an incredible display of ignorance. I am appalled and don’t know what to say at this particular moment.”

Another archeologist is planning to sue the construction company, D-Mar Construction.

The company hung up on the reporter that called, and didn’t answer another 12+ calls. After another call connected, owner Denny Grijalva said he would be at the site in 20 minutes, but then never came.

The police came a little later and stopped the work, and after they and the archeologists left the company reportedly removed the equipment from the area.

“It’s a feeling of Incredible disbelief because of the ignorance and the insensitivity … they were using this for road fill,” Jaime Awe, director of the Belize Institute of Archaeology said. “It’s like being punched in the stomach, it’s just so horrendous.”

Belizean police said that charges are possible, and are conducting an investigation. Although the Noh Mul complex sits on private land, the country’s law says any pre-Hispanic ruins are under government protection.

The phenomenon of ancient sites being destroyed is all too common, though.

“I don’t think I am exaggerating if I say that every day a Maya mound is being destroyed for construction in one of the countries where the Maya lived,” wrote Francisco Estrada-Belli, a professor at Tulane University’s Anthropology Department.

“Unfortunately, this destruction of our heritage is irreversible but many don’t take it seriously,” he added. “The only way to stop it is by showing that it is a major crime and people can and will go to jail for it.”

they may be part of our heritage but look at this way many of us will never see most of the world even those that do cant take it to the grave and many archeological findings are so corrupt after it gets to the main stream news we never know the truth of anything shown to us . so i guess mark one up for complete idiots who don’t think before they do something.

Sorry, but, while it is a terrible thing to happen It looks like it was just a dilapidated mound of dirt… If it was so important, it should have been maintained, had fencing around it with signs informing whomever of it’s significance. Too bad, you snooze; you lose. Now go pay attention to the remainder of mounds or meet the same fate.

Ok, I’m sorry but if this statement is true:

“I don’t think I am exaggerating if I say that every day a Maya mound is being destroyed for construction in one of the countries where the Maya lived,”

Then there should be nothing to worry about. That would imply that there are tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of Mayan ruins, and a mound here and there isn’t going to hurt anything. Sure it’s a piece of history, but eventually materials need to be reused. I have personally visited many Mayan ruins and many of them are beautiful, but some of them are piles of junk that can be destroyed and no one would miss them much.
