Samsung ATIV Q – Windows and Android combined

Samsung announces the ATIV Q, a Windows-Android hybrid tablet

Alongside the new opalescent Galaxy S4 range and the Galaxy NX, Samsung has announced another exciting product – the Samsung ATIV Q.

The ATIV Q is a tablet that runs both Android and Windows 8 and can switch between the two without even rebooting. It’s got a big old display as well, 13.3″, with a qHD resolution of 3200 x 1800.

It’s not just the dual-boot that makes the ATIV Q stand out though – it’s also got a sliding QWERTY keyboard built-in and can be adjusted into four different positions. See the image gallery below for a better idea of these.

Building on one of the successes of the Galaxy Note range, the ATIV Q also includes an S Pen stylus. Samsung says the tablet has been optimised for use in bright sunlight and has  viewing angles up to 178 degrees.

Being able to seamlessly switch between using Android and Windows will make the ATIV Q the first of its kind. There have been other products with this functionality released, but not at the high-end of the market. If the ATIV Q works as seamlessly as Samsung makes it sound, it will be the first consumer product to successfully implement dual-booting in a consumer tablet.

With the ATIV Q, it is simply a question of hitting the start button to switch between Android Jelly Bean and Windows 8 – there is no need to reboot the device. You can pin apps to the homescreen of either OS.

The ATIV Q runs on a Core i5 Haswell processor and offers up to nine hours of battery life. It is due to launch in the UK later this year – we will provide price and availability details as soon as they are available.
