Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
Finally, after weeks of rumours, Samsung has publicly revealed the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active.
The S4 Active is pretty much the same as the Galaxy S4 all round, but has an IP67 protection rating. Otherwise, the most noticeable difference in the specs is the change in the camera, which has an 8MP sensor on the S4 Active compared to a 13MP sensor on the S4.
The three capacitive buttons on the S4 have also been replaced with physical buttons on the S4 Active.
As you would expect the ruggedness of the S4 Active has increased the dimensions of the handset; the S4 Active has a thickness of 9.1mm compared to 7.9mm on the S4 and is slightly taller and wider.
In the official press release Samsung has stated that the S4 Active will arrive this summer and will initially be available in the US and Sweden. We will confirm details on UK pricing and availability as soon as possible.
With its IP67 rating, the S4 Active will be a direct competitor to the Sony Xperia Z, which was the first flagship handset to include dust and water resistance. The Xperia Z has protection ratings of IP55 and IP57, which means that the S4 is slightly more rugged, although it suffers a thicker design as a result – the Xperia Z still manages a profile that’s just 7.9mm thick.
A nice addition that Samsung has made with the S4 Active is ‘Aqua Mode’ for the camera, which it says can be used to ‘increase visual quality and clarity for enhanced underwater images and video’.
Shooting underwater videos can still be tricky with water-resistant handsets, especially if they use capacitive buttons. Aqua Mode therefore enables the use of the volume down key as a dedicated camera key.
An official launch party and media hands-on session for the handset is scheduled to take place in London on Thursday June 20th.
