Sony Announces Xperia Z Ultra – 6.4” Smartphone

Sony Mobile have today announced the latest edition to the Xperia family, the Xperia Z Ultra. Dubbed, “The world’s slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone display” the Ultra boasts a 6.4” full HD Triluminos display powered by X-Reality. At 6.4” this device certainly seems to fit into the recently created category of “Phablet”. Just like its smaller brother, the Xperia Z, the Ultra is waterproof and dust resistant with an IP55/IP58 rating and a durable design.

The Ultra is the latest revolution in Sony’s premium large-screen android smartphones which blur the line between phone and tablet. It is the first smartphone to incorporate a Full HD Triluminos display powered by X-Reality for a fully immersive viewing experience. The Ultra will feature a fully integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2.2 GHz quad-core processor. Sony have stated that the Ultra will posses “industry leading” battery performance.

The Xperia Z Ultra’s defining feature is surely its 6.4” Full HD display with Sony’s new and unique TRILUMINOS display for mobile, this is said to create a wider and richer palette of natural colours. Sony’s X-Reality for mobile offers an intelligent resolution display which analyses each image and reproduces lacking pixels to optimize quality for the sharpest videos. It analyses elements according to the scene and adjusts them based on pattern, outline and colour composition. The Full HD display is reported to optimise the viewing experience as much 60% more than other smartphones.

The Xperia Z Ultra is certainly a great looking device, at only 6.5mm thick and 212 grams it is definitely elegant and portable at the same time. The front and back of the device are made from the same premium tempered glass materials as the Xperia Z and Xperia Z tablet, resulting in a clean and sharp looking smartphone.

The only waterproof full HD smartphone

Just like the other Xperia Z’s, the 5” smartphone and the tablet, the Xperia Z ultra has an IP55 and IP58 rating, meaning it is dust resistant and waterproof – giving you the freedom to enjoy it anywhere. The Ultra also offers the ability to record full HD video underwater using the “Exmor RS for mobile” camera. The HDR camera on the Ultra is similar to the one used on the 5” version of the Xperia Z, featuring “superior auto mode” which automatically activates HDR and noise reduction when needed, creating stunning imagery even in challenging lighting conditions.

Entertainment experience

The Xperia Z Ultra has a large amount to offer on the entertainment side of things, its big 6.4” screen makes it ideal for watching movies, playing games, reading books and browsing the web.

The Sony’s Walkman feature allows the discovery of offline and online content through a single access point with its Album and movies media applications. Walkman also leverages Sony’s audio engine and Facebook integration for sharing and discovering new music, it provides seamlessly integrated access to all your downloaded music as well as access to a global library of over 20 million songs from Sony’s cloud-based subscription music service, Music Unlimited.
