39,000 Year-Old Woolly Mammoth Goes On Display In Japan

A 39,000-year-old woolly mammoth named Yuka is set to make her debut in Yokohama, Japan, and she will go on display starting on July 13, 2013, and stay there through Sept. 16, 2013. TheBBC reported on July 10, 2013, that the very well-preserved woolly mammoth has arrived at the exhibition hall and is ready to be seen.

Yuka was found in ice in Siberia, Russian back in March of 2012. Researchers and discoverers actually even said that they had found flowing blood with the woolly mammoth.

“It can be assumed that the blood of mammoths had some cryo-protective properties.”

Yuka was originally stated to be about 10,000-years-old, but DNA tests have found her age to be almost four times that. Most of her body was in soil and ice when they found her, and it allowed for the woolly mammoth to be preserved in a very well condition.

Now, besides being on display, scientists are hoping to be able to clone Yuka. Samples of her blood and muscle tissue have been extracted and the hope is that woolly mammoths can be resurrected.This is the best preserved specimen of woolly mammoth that has ever been found.

Yuka is a baby woolly mammoth and was estimated to be about two-and-a-half years old when she died so long ago.
