(ALTHeadlines) Human history is incredibly rich in legends and stories. Yet perhaps none is as well known, and enticing, as that of the Lost City of Atlantis. Originally stemming from Plato in 330 B.C., most historians believe the story to simply be one of Plato’s many fables, intended to teach a lesson.

In this story, Atlantis was an incredibly advanced community and civilization that attempted to “take over the world.” In their efforts, the Athenians fought back, and Atlantis was defeated, lost forever.

That legend has morphed into Atlantis being viewed as an idealized place to live, with countless people across history going on a search for it. And plenty have claimed to have found it, or at least pinpointed which ocean or country one would have to look for it.

Because of extensive mapping (although there is, of course, plenty more to discover) of the ocean floors there are some very likely candidates for this illusive lost city and clues to the civilization being decovered.

Many still believe that as our deep sea exploratory capibility improves, there are still a chance we can encover more answers to this age old mystery.
