Military Seeking to Lead the Way in Mobile Security

In a recent cybersecurity address, Greg Youst, DISA’s chief mobility engineer, discussed the implications of DOD mobile security for the marketplace. The military recognizes the growing potential of utilizing mobile devices in the “within garrison and tactical environments and the need to provide an agile method of meeting those needs.” As a result, the DOD is expending access to mobile devices through a robust BYOD implementation. This increase requires an increase in security. “Systems (are) being developed to ensure classified information can be transmitted securely.”[1]

These developments have ramifications in the private sector. Healthcare, banking and various industries in corporate America will be able to leverage security developments as a result of DOD research and development. Officials at the Defense Information System Agency (DISA) are working with industry leaders to develop a secure communication solution that can support the 600,000 mobile device users within the DOD. According to Youst, Google, Apple and Samsung are in discussion with his team.

“What’s driving them to work with DOD and the federal government is that if they can get to our level of security, then they can go market out to the corporate world, and you’re starting to see that,” Youst said. “They’re leveraging the capability that they’re building for us by saying, ‘If we can make it secure enough for the Department of Defense, we can give you a system for phone or mobile device management that will secure your banking information [or] your health information.”
