Samsung AllShare is now Samsung Link

It actually happened a few months ago, but now the dust has settled and most of Samsung’s newest smartphone range is available, we’d just like to point out that the AllShare Play service has been updated and renamed.

AllShare Play was Samsung’s DLNA implementation that lets you share content across Samsung devices (or compatible devices with AllShare software installed) over a local network. It is probably most familiar to Galaxy S3 and Note 2 users that purchased a Samsung AllShare Dongle to be able to stream content and mirror their device screen to an HDTV. The dongle would connect through HDMI to any HDTV and allow AllShare enabled mobile devices to share content, although over the last year most of Samsung’s own HDTVs have also included the feature as standard.

AllShare has been updated and is now called ‘Samsung Link’, so if anyone has bought a new Galaxy device recently and is wondering where the AllShare feature is, then that’s your answer! Compatible mobile devices are registered to Samsung Link through your Samsung account. If you have an older device and want to check compatibility, then a list can be obtained from the Mobile FAQ on Samsung’s support page HERE. This page also has links to TV and PC FAQs too, and there is also an option to download the desktop software.

The desktop suite can be installed on any PC with a minimum requirement of Intel Pentium dual-core 2.6GHz or higher, 2GB of RAM and any Windows OS from XP except for RT. I use it on my Toshiba laptop and it works brilliantly, shared folders that are marked for use with Link are picked up by my Smart TV and I’m yet to find an incompatible file type in my film and TV collection (a full list is available on the FAQ pages).

There are some pretty slick new features in Samsung Link that were not present in the earlier AllShare. These are all included for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and newer devices and should roll out to others through updates. First is the option for storage either in the cloud or through a designated storage device in your network. Through Samsung Link you can upload photos, videos and documents to your desired storage location. There is even an automatic upload feature that can be customised to send your images and videos safely straight after you take them. Next is a global search of all content stored in the devices registered to your account and finally a single page overview of the most recent items added to all the devices in your Samsung Link account.
