HRD Ministry Launches Online Repository For Teachers To Create And Share Virtual Educational Content

Digital Education is about to get a big push thanks to the latest endeavor by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry of the Indian Government.  The ministry has launched a national repository of open-ended education resources. Compiled by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the repository will essentially serve as an open digital library which will contain all types of educational content in the digital form.

The repository will contain content in the form of Documents, interactive programs, audio and visual teaching aides. Being geared for schools across India, the repository is being built to cover all subjects across standards and grades. Additionally, the repository won’t just be applicable for students and teachers, but can be accessed by parents and other academicians as well. Still being compiled, this digital library will be demarcated into two sections, i.e. elementary education and higher & secondary level education. Further segregation in the categories like written content, video, audio, interactive content, and images is also being effected to simplify access and data retrieval.

The country already has multiple such endeavors being worked upon by national as well as private companies. In fact, Microsoft in collaboration AICTE, Wikipedia, Britannica have their own version of such repositories that are aimed squarely at students and are imparting knowledge and education via such soft tools.

Government seems to have realized the importance of crowd-scouring and hence content for this library will be assimilated from multiple sources. Additionally, teachers are being encouraged to contribute shared MM Pallam Raju, Minister HRD, “The chance of experimenting and showcasing one’s own creation will give teachers much-needed confidence that they can also create” Online repositories are only as useful as the content therein. Affordable tablets have made the delivery medium easier, but the content will decide the adoption.
