(DARPA) 47th Genetic Chromosome insert to genetically alter humans

The use of the concept of DARPA is found in television shows like the Bionic Woman, and the Million Dollar Man, as well as Knightrider, and other technologically advanced ideas for the program or television show. The superhumans in Million Dollar Man, and Bionic Woman were based on the idea of Dr. Frankenstein. The idea that these people were brought back to life through technological advancements, and through this use of technology these individuals who were introduced to superhuman life were advanced in basic excercise, and other aspects of intelligence.

DARPA to getenitcally alter humans by creating a 47th DNA  Chromosome? It is not just for mammals, but this project is being specifically engineered for human beings. The 1997 film Society was a film based on the concept of Eugenics. Eugenics, or genetically altering the individual, and programming them to be the perfect human being. In this film,alternatively, those individuals whom have not been genetically altered, are considered to be invalid irrelevent of the quality of skills and information you posess. The film from 2011 called In Time portrays the idea that the human body is genetically programmed to stop aging at the age of 25. Of course these individuals would have to earn specific credits that afford them more time to “stay alive”

DARPA is a branch of the DoD research department. The DoD DARPA has solicited a proposal for a program called Advanced Tools for Mammalian Genome Engineering, as a part of the Government’s Small Business Innovation Research site.

Description, or statement of objective

“The ability to deliver exogenous DNA to mammalian cell lines is a fundamental tool in the development of advanced therapeutics, vaccines, and cellular diagnostics, as well as for basic biological and biomedical research… The successful development of technologies for rapid introduction of large DNA vectors into human cell lines will enable the ability to engineer much more complex functionalities into human cell lines than are currently possible.”

The projects true statement of objective desires to “improve utilization of HAC’s or (Human Artificial Chromosomes) some jokes from the doctors or researchers for the program imply that DARPA wants to literally HAC(k) the human mind, and a wikipedia explanation defines what a HAC is and what it is capable of doing.

“A human artificial chromosome (HAC) is a microchromosome that can act as a new chromosome in a population of human cells. That is, instead of 46 chromosomes, the cell could have 47 with the 47th being very small, roughly 6-10 megabases in size, and able to carry new genes introduced by human researchers.”

In other words, DARPA and its associates intend to create a new chromosome, that is to be used specifically on human beings to use the 47th chromosome as a genetic insert for alteration or “improvements” to our DNA. The company hopes that this technology will be a solution to the limits on the “gene transfer technology” that they presently have.The proposal suggests that the approaches they currently have should be improved as a result of identified drawbacks in the scientists failure to control their results, which in turn presents major problems.

“These include random DNA insertion into the host genome, variation in stable integration sites between cell lines, variation in the copy number and expression level of DNA that is delivered, limitations on the number and size of DNA constructs that can be delivered, and immunological responses to foreign DNA. “

Quite reassuring to know they are already using this technique. The concern for the scientists who have access to this kind of technology can be compared to the term of playing god. This gives entirely too much access to the ability to customize an individuals genetic makeup. It allows the scientist to change and mold the human to the type of character desired, as well as the physical appearance. The ability to alter the individual or specimen entirely exists through the phrase and process of “genome scale engineering”.  It allows the scientist to summon life into whatever form he pleases.

The DARPA research program has capabilities such as “mind control”, study of the human hormone “oxytocin” or the ‘improve’ the human mind’s response to Government perpetrated propaganda. It also uses a third DARPA “brain interface” project that is literally capable of converting our soldiers into cyborgs, which is just plain creepy. If each of these projects doesn’t send a chill up your spine, these projects combined should be the factor that raises chilling questions as to what kind of technological world are we going to be forced into?

June 30, 2011 DARPA in an effort to make the impossible a real possibiity DARPA was looking for companies that can harness the power of biology for the ability to speed up and lower the costs of production, as well as the production and manufacturing of devices. Alicia Jackson a program manager introduced “living foundries” and admittedly stated the technology offers a new capability to completely harness. Harness what? Well Alicia Jackson claims that in order for the program to achieve its desired goals and visions, the program will have to use the capabilities of ‘synthetic biology”, and “metabolic engineering”. The process of applying these technologies would allow us to make the things we want in a time efficient manner, and a predictable fashion.

For example artemisinin or sweet wormwood takes around a year to cultivate, but the one year to cultivate would be considered unsustainable to developing countries, so researchers led by Jay Keasling from the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory in 2003, and in 2004 the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had combined efforts to build a chemical factory that whereby adding genes from yeast, sweet wormwood, and genes from bacteria started churning out cells that were artemisinic acid.

This method of production greatly reduces the cost of its production and certainly the time it consists of to produce the drug as well. The next step in this manufacturing technique intends to expand its agency announcement.

“PLAYING GOD”

“The next step is for us to release a broad agency announcement, Jackson said. “That’s essentially our call for proposals.”

Companies that respond to the announcement won’t compete against each other, they’ll be chosen based on their ideas.

“What we’re talking about here is not necessarily making one specific thing. We’re not in that one-off world we’re in today where you make one thing, but you’re no better at making the next thing,” Jackson said.

“We’re all about creating the capability,” she added, “so we can make a huge array of things that we can’t even produce today.”

This is vague in terms of what they want to create, the uses for these creations. Technological advancements in society today look not only to assist in disease and cancer research, but advance the course of such diseasees, and now they are suggesting altering the genetic makeup of human beings. The process could result in “hyper life forms”. The creepy part is not the technology, but the intent.
