Wikipedia To Add Voices Of Famous Personalities, Seeks BBC’s Assistance

Global repository of information Wikipedia will soon add Voice Samples of famous and prominent personalities.

The online encyclopedia has decided that the respective pages of famous personalities or as the company wishes to call them, Digital Biographies will not only feature textual information and images, but also Voice Samples. Visitors to these pages will be able to hear exactly how these personalities sounded. Initiated under ‘Wikipedia Voice intro project’ (WikiVip), the platform aims to capture, store and catalog sound samples that will serve to immortalize a very vital aspect of the person’s fame; The Voice.

How will the addition work? Wikipedia itself is one of the largest authoritarian collections of historically and factually accurate repositories not just in the digital, but even in the physical world. Constantly amended, edited and checked via a moderated crowd–sourcing mechanism, the information is not just accurate is highly current and relevant too.

Interestingly, Wikipedia had started to add short sound files to its service, offering proper pronunciation of subject’s name. But these clips weren’t of the actual person about whom the page was. That project seems to have evolved into an attempt to offer actual voices so that people could truly experience another level about that person. The platform has approached British Broadcasting Company (BBC) to share its database from the BBC Voice Project.

Wikipedia’s interest in Cataloging Voices is a vital step in truly immortalizing the personas. Multiple celebrities, politicians and influential people have gained fame and fortune by the mere use of their Voice. These people have spoken, some quite vociferously, about their passions or in their careers. Mere words or images about them simply do not do justice to the larger–than–life presence and respect that these people have commanded.
