Cindy Tang wins the Doodle 4 Google Canada Contest

Toronto student Cindy Tang’s “Sea Telescope” submission has won the finals for the first ever Doodle4Google Canada contest. Public voting for the National Finalists was open from December 31 to February 14. Her submission is a colourful illustration of a telescope with the ability to see through the depths of the seas, 95% of which is still unseen by human eyes.

The national winner was revealed today during a ceremony in Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

Cindy is a student at Dr. Norman Bethune C.I. in Scarborough, Ontario. She has won the prize which includes a $10,000 scholarship, a $10,000 grant for her school and a HP Chromebook computer. Her contest winning illustration will be featured as the Google Doodle on Google.ca on Wednesday, Feburary 26, 2014. The ROM will present her drawing as part of a special museum exhibit next month.

The contest asked students in kindergarten through Grade 12 to submit an image illustrating the theme: “If I could invent anything, I would invent…” Cindy’s Sea Telescope illustration answers with, “I would invent a telescope that would show us the depth of the sea (all of it). I’ve heard we’ve discovered less than 5% of the ocean – 95% still left unseen by human eyes.”

Cindy was the finalist for the Ontario region who was joined by the four other national finalists:

-British Columbia and the North: Maria Angela Viaje of Johnston Heights Secondary for Virtual Reality Simulator.
-Prairies: Xusheng (Sam) Yu of St. Francis Xavier Community School for Electric Trees
-Quebec: Meriam Akkou of École Secondaire La Camaradière for Underwater City.
-Atlantic Canada: David Isaiah Jeans of Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School for Age Reversing Machine.

The yearly contest was announced on October 11 where submissions were accepted until December 31, at the end of which 75 finalists were chosen by the celebrity judging panel consisting of retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, Google Science Fair winner Ann Makosinski, and Royal Ontario Museum CEO Janet Carding. From that, they narrowed it down to  25 finalists, 5 per region.
