Government Makes It Mandatory For All Public Transport Vehicles To Have GPS
The Government of India seems to have enforced a strict policy which mandates all Public Transport Vehicles to feature Global Positioning System (GPS) capability.
According to a ministry of road transport and highways circular, owners of public service vehicles are required to get GPS (Global Positioning System) installed in their vehicles by February 20, 2014. Interestingly, appearing to sound stern, the Government ‘warned’ that failing to comply would result in Penal Action ‘as deemed necessary’ against the defaulters.
The road ministry had earlier asked passenger vehicle owners to install these devices by 30 September, 2013. But that deadline passed and Vehicle Owners hadn’t complied with the same.
Why is Government insistent on meeting the requirement? It’s no secret that atrocities against women are on the rise. More often than not, crimes against women are committed in Public Transport Vehicles like Buses, Rickshaws and such other mode of Conveyance.
Taking a serious note of the same, the Government set–up Nirbhaya Fund for women safety. In accordance to the same, the Government even approved Rs. 1,405 Crores (US$ 226 Million) project to track and monitor public transport and provide alarm buttons for alerting authorities. The project involves setting up of Closed Circuit Television (CCTVs) and using GPS to ensure safety and security of women and girls in distress.
This is the second sector that is at the receiving end from the Government. Earlier, the telecom companies have heard from GoI about installing Location Based Servers that will help narrow down the location of the subscriber. Quite recently the Government had approved another project under the same Fund to enhance the Safety of Women.
Once all these agencies comply with the regulations, India could have a holistic monitoring system that would be able to quickly detect atrocities, zero–in on the location and dispatch emergency personnel to the location. However, the efficacy of the system will depend on the swift action of the parties involved. Surprisingly, it is not the Government that is dragging its feet.
