Dropbox Expected To Enter India By Tying Up With Telecom and Web Service Companies

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

After its acquisition of Zulip, Cloud Storage company Dropbox could soon enter the Indian Mobile segment and is likely to partner with Telecom Service Operators as well as Web Service providers, revealed a statement from Sujay Jaswa, VP and business development head at Dropbox,

For us it doesn’t make sense to have a local sales team in the short term, but we will work through partners. The firm is in talks with several Indian companies, including large corporations, which could be potential customers.

Jaswa however declined to name any companies as the talks were in the early stages and nothing has been finalized.

Why isn’t Dropbox launching exclusively? India’s mobile internet usage is rising very steadily. Multiple reports have been indicating that Indian Mobile users now surfing internet mainly from the mobile devices and for a large demographic, mobiles are the first and primary internet access device.

However, the services that the Indians use, unfortunately doesn’t include cloud–storage devices, since Indians still prefer to carry their data stored on their expandable storage media like Micro SD Cards. For Dropbox, this is a big challenge as the only way to make users prefer cloud storage, is to offer a lucrative data tariff that will make, keeping the data stored in the clouds, as easy and cheap as lugging the same on a card.

Indians are consuming more data, but for services like music and video streaming, whereas Dropbox is much more generic and allows storage and retrieval of all sort of data ranging from office files to presentations and compressed media to  multimedia.

Dropbox presently claims to have more than 200 Million users and interestingly, since the service is passive and needed regularly, majority of the users are active. However, Dropbox has many competitors including Google GDrive, Microsoft’s OneDrive and many others.

Under such competitive circumstances, having mobile service providers and telecom operators on its side, will surely come in handy to offer attractive usage packages. What do you think?
