Nokia Has Launched The Nokia X Android Phone In India For Rs.8599

Nokia held an event today in New Delhi to launch the Nokia X officially in the country. This launch is happening within 2 weeks of the phone’s announcement at the MWC 2014. This shows how important India is to the Nokia X’s sales. The low cost Android phone is meant to be a sort of a gateway to the Lumia range of devices.

Nokia X is available immediately at a retail price of Rs. 8599. The Nokia X+ and XL will be available in stores after 60 days or so. Nokia X users will be getting 7GB of OneDrive and an additional 3GB can be unlocked if you turn on the automatic image uploads. MixRadio is another special app for the Nokia X. It has a database of 30 million songs and users can create and share their own mixes. You will be able to save upto 4 mixes offline for 30 days. Nokia Here will allow users to use maps both online and offline. You will also be able to install third party app stores along with the one Nokia ships. This will give users access to more apps. Apps can be sideloaded from the SD card in the usual way.

The strategy that Nokia is employing by releasing Android devices can be debated at length, especially since its acquisition by Microsoft. However, this phone does stand some chance for adoption among Indian mobile phone users because of its low cost, android app compatibility and a full featured suite of Nokia and Microsoft specific apps. The UI and the experience in general has been designed to be similar to the Windows Phone UI. Nokia, hopes that by dangling this ‘carrot’ at a low cost, it will be able to influence these same users to upgrade to more full-featured Lumia phones. Personally, I am not sure how well this will work out for them. Also, there is a chance that Microsoft may shutter this line after the acquisition is complete.  Those who are looking for long term support for the Nokia X in terms of software upgrades should decide accordingly, when it comes to buying this phone.
