Zuckerberg says Facebook is going 3D

Is Facebook, the largest social media web site in the world about to add virtual reality to its list of services? The mega-corporation just paid two billion dollars for Oculus VR, manufacturers of virtual reality headsets.

With this purchase, Facebook will soon be able to offer users a chance to connect in virtual reality. Instant messaging and chat could turn into a life-life experience, as users could communicate in any environment they could imagine.

One challenge Facebook will face as it moves toward virtual reality will be getting headsets into homes.

Mark Zuckerberg has said that he believes virtual reality could become one of the “platforms of tomorrow.”

The purchase price included $400 million in cash, and $1.6 billion in stock. Developers of Oculus could also earn up to $300 million in bonuses, based on the performance of their device.

Many avid video gamers believed the Oculus headset was designed as a gaming system. Reaction to the purchase from the gaming community has, so far, been largely negative.

Markus Persson, developer of the game Minecraft, said, “We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just canceled that deal. Facebook creeps me out.” (1)

Oculus began development with a Kickstarter campaign, which raised $2.4 million dollars. Most of that was from video game enthusiasts. Persson donated $10,000 to the development of the headset.

The gaming world also just lost one of their great innovators to Facebook. John Carmack is joining the social media site. He is best known for creating the games Quake and Doom.

If this new acquisition by Facebook comes to its full potential, it could change social networking forever. The question is whether unwanted game requests will be less annoying when they come from a virtual owl.
