Volkswagen XL 1 Banned in America - It Does 260 mpg... Oil Companies Said NO WAY!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

You won’t find the 300 MPG Volkswagen XL1 in an American showroom, in fact it has even been denied a tour of America because it is too efficient for the American public to be made widely aware of, and oil profits are too high in America with the status quo in place.

It is a tad expensive, but… oil companies have been posting record profits for the last ten years. Why stop the feeding trough?

(More below video)

No tour has been allowed for this car because the myth that 50 mpg is virtually impossible to obtain from even a stripped down econobox is too profitable to let go of, and when it comes to corporate oil profits, ignorance is bliss.

Years ago I had calculated that it should be possible to get a small car to exceed 100 mpg by putting parallel direct to cylinder water injectors side by side with the fuel injectors, and using the exhaust manifold to preheat the water so it would enter the cylinders as dry steam, thus providing added expansion (which drives the engine) while allowing the combustion process to proceed without reducing it’s efficiency.

But I was obviously wrong with my calculations, because they were in fact over 2x conservative. The 100 mpg carburetor was indeed a reality, and the Volkswagen XL1 proves it with only straightforward nothing special technology we have had since the 1970′s.

Though the XL1 can be plugged in to deliver a 40 mile all electric drive, it does not need to be plugged in EVER to achieve 300 mpg. And it does not cheat in any way to achieve the rating, it weighs over 1,700 pounds, has normal tires, and delivers a very good driving experience with a governed top speed of 99 mph.

The XL1 could reach a top speed in excess of 110 mph absent governor and turns in a 0-60 time of 11.5 seconds which is by no means leisurly for a car designed for efficiency. The XL1 in no way cheats on performance to hit it’s rating. It is simply the car we should have always had, and have had taken from us in the name of oil profits.

Though the XL1 can hit 300 mpg under ideal driving conditions, it’s combined mileage is usually a little over 200 mpg, and if you do city driving only that will drop to a minimum of 180 mpg under the worst driving conditions. But I’d be happy with that no doubt.

What does that kind of fuel economy really mean?

Environmentalists all over the world should be screaming from every corner, window, etc, etc for the introduction of this car into the US and around the world as well. This is the Holy Grail of what they have been screaming about. But ten to one they’ll be trying to shut down some new energy plant over the supposed danger to some turtle or lizard instead of focusing their attention where it should be applied.
Being an American I can say this. The reason that America is so screwed up is that it is full of screwed up people, including most of the “so called or self proclaimed” environmentalists. The problem with Americans is that most of the population are fools living under the misguided misconception that they are smarter than everyone else.
America is like a doddering delusional old man stumbling about thinking everyone is out to get him. It would be laughable except that he has a very large loaded gun in his hand. The rest of the world is tiring of his antics and the very real danger he represents. Eventually someone is going to take away the old fool’s gun and won’t give a damned if he gets hurt or dies in the process.

is that a fact, Professor. Sounds very similar to all the propaganda out there that is supposed to justify the fact that soon, on an already agreed day and time, the USA and all its embattled good people will be flushed in 1 hour, along with the dollar.

    • Ben

      This is shocking (if true).

Damn oil companies need blowing up.

      Power to the people!!

I hate to break the bubble, but VW is only going to make 200 of these things and all will be sold (actually they arent being sold…its more like a raffle or lottery) in Europe. They arent banned in the US, its just that only a handful of places have laws that allow this type of car to be driven on the roadway. Kinda of like how you cant ride bikes or drive tractors on the interstate…the government isnt banning bikes or tractors…you just cant drive them on the interstate, well you cant drive these things on most roads. Also, VW is a European car maker and as such will test prototypes in Europe to see if they are even viable as full production vehicles. Lastly, this car is likely to cost about 150K dollars, only the most hardcore tree huggers would be willing to drop that much cash for 300mpg, this car would have almost no buyer base in the USA. Hell, just look at the sales Tesla has gotten, not that many. Basically, its another VW extreme project that VW probably wont make a profit off of.

VW has always had atrocious problems with electrics in all their cars so there is no way in hell id buy an electric car from VW anyways.

      • Fr.Duffy Fighting 69th

Sure. But they let people drive around on those scooters/organ donation devices. There is more to the story. And price point is a function of production. If they made cars like this in large numbers the price would come down. And i guarantee you people are ready for a car that gets this kind of MPG. I would drive one, and this is coming from someone who has a 5.7 liter truck and a 6.3 liter V12 Jaguar.

    • Lude

Then you always have the apologist in this country and say they don’t meet US safety standards and are death traps. Then tell you Americans just wont buy them.
Ford sells a car in Europe right now that gets over 60mpg but cant sell it here.

      • A_NeWorlDisorder

Well its not just safety standards but emissions also. there are dozens of auto manufacturers around the world that dont even try to enter the US market because of the extra costs in making a car meet US standards. The US has the most strict emissions laws in the world. You’d be very surprised how many models that automakers build that will never get to US shores.

Also, diesels…they are very efficient compared to gasoline engine, but why arent they everywhere in the US? Is big oil trying to stop people from buying diesels? Yeah, that makes sense. Diesels are very dirty and need a lot of equipment to make them meet emissions. That equipment kills MPG. Ever notice how a new car/truck with a diesel in it cost significantly more than one with a gas engine? it has nothing to do with the manufacturing of the engine itself, its the cost of the equipment and R&D to make it pass regulations.

Call people like me an apologist all you want. Not everything in this world is an evil conspiracy.

        enjoy the following…

        http://www.hybridcars.com/lusting-europe-illegal-high-mpg-cars-25323/

The enemy of MPG in the US isnt big oil and corrupt politicians, its the EPA and lawn sniffing yuppies.

    • shock an awe

Our Government would not want their campaign donations slashed , big oil speaks Government acts .

    • Who dat

260 mpg, that’s in Europe and Japan, get a family of four yanks and it’s down to 35 mpg. He he.

    • Fageol

It would be interesting to see the engineering calculations that say the VW or any engine can produce such efficiency. Forget environmentalists, bureaucrats, etc. The big Wartsilla and Man B&W engines in supertankers and container ships approach 50% thermal efficiency with a bsfc of .278 (pounds of heavy fuel oil per hp per hour). I doubt if an automotive engine can produce those efficiencies that would enable that claim. Recall the author says that 200 mpg can be achieved without added electric power.

As usual we see that normal crap about the oil companies suppressing invention or innovation. But look at the market for diesel engines in big equipment and big trucks. Buyers go for the motors that meet emission standards and get the best mileage.

Count me in as a skeptic.

    • FusedNail

From ’260 mpg’ in the title… to ’300 mpg’ in the description. WTF Go back to school!

      • Tom Dennen, the paranoid historian

Can’t read more than two lines, Fused? One normally hears the argument of the opposition to the end before making suggestions like going back to school. Get a Thesaurus…

    • CrowPie

New 3-wheeled vehicle made by Elio Motors gets 672 miles on 1 tank of gas

Elio car will be available in 2014, will cost less than $10,000. It will not be legal in some states like Alabama, however. Politicians don’t want to register the vehicle. It seems they can’t figure out whether to call it a car (even though it has a closed hard top) or a motorcycle. (Because it only has three wheels.)

      • CrowPie

Of course we know that it really boils down to….we won’t buy as much gas……..

    • deenie

Big Oil has been keeping mpg very low since the 1920′s. Nikola Tesla had a zero-point-energy engine that used no fuel at all and could drive a Packard at 90mph all day. Henry Ford was thinking about putting this in his cars but Big Oil struck a deal with him to keep the gas engines. There have been, since Tesla, many others who’ve developed very high mileage cars, some that ran on water, but all have been squelched, sometimes lethally. Big Oil has too great an influence over this country and its so-called leaders. Innovation is being actively suppressed in energy, medicine, education, farming, etc.. The 0.01% are killing the American spirit and ruining the country.

      • DRAUGR

It isn’t big oil that is the only problem that America has to deal with, it’s the institutionally insane EPA as well. Do not ever forget that. Big oil ain’t exactly your friend but the EPA could truly be called an enemy of the people. Big oil just wants your money, the EPA wants your lives.

The story is BS — 1st of all, see:

      http://www.hybridcars.com/volkswagens-xl1-goes-to-the-museum/

BTW, I’m a mechanical / automotive engineer & I know statements like the above “. . . the myth that 50 mpg is virtually impossible to obtain from even a stripped down econobox . . .” are BS, as is the claim that you can’t buy a VW Jetta with the TDI diesel in America. That car has been available @ dealerships for several years & reported real-world fuel mileage is 36-38 city, 48-52 highway.

Study the 1st law of thermodynamics, a/k/a the law of conservation of energy, before you go off on a rant like the BS story above. Or believe pie-in-the-sky stories if you prefer — but those don’t change reality.

    • Dustdevil

Once again proving you can’t get truth from anyone on BIN.

How about this: Volkswagen violated dozens of patents against GM with its former EV1, just to make this thing. Volkswagen is doing this out of rage and only making 250 of them, for European sale, and each unit will be in excess of $120,000 each. The car ONLY PRODUCES 35 horsepower, and is an almost-identical clone visually to the GM-EV1 that they shut down.

Here, don’t believe me, read the Car-and-Driver report on this goofy chicken-tooth.

You people want to hate just to hate, and don’t have a clue why. You are TOOLS for anyone with a satellite to spin up and sick on others, however they want. You aren’t people, you are attack-dogs used by whatever power-that-exists to do whatever they want.

Go back to school, and actually research something – instead of sitting around, smoking dope, and trying to create more paranoia.

      1. Only made 250 of the things yet.
      2. It is a 1 liter engine and a two seater, most Americans will not buy such a car. Only 8 HP.
      3. The cost is almost $150,000 each.
      4. VW says it will not sell the car here in the US. It most likely cannot pass US crash tests.

No Oil Company involvement at all. Another stupid scare story demolished….

Well VW is only planning on making 250 of them in total, it is more of a concept car than a production car according to Car and Driver, July 2013 issue. So NO, I say again NO coverup, no Big Oil blocking this. Oh and by the way it will only cost an estimated $120,000 each.

    • Tom Dennen, the paranoid historian

It’s a study in attitudes – do we stay locked into Big Oil or embrace almost any alternative?

    • Patriot Games

There is something called a “Specially Constructed vehicle” title in my state. I’m guessing most states have their version of it.

It allows a custom-built vehicle to be titled, registered and used on the highways, even if it was not manufactured by a normal vehicle manufacturer.

So…. Buy the engine and electronics, and swap it into your chassis of choice.
