Water To Gasoline Demonstrated By Sunfire
A Power-to-Liquids (PtL) demonstration rig which is the first of its kind in the world was officially inaugurated by Dresden-based Sunfire GmbH on November 14th in the presence of German Federal Minister of Education and Research Johanna Wanka, Bilfinger Board Member Pieter Koolen and a number of other high-ranking representatives from the worlds of politics, industry and research.
Step 2 – the reverse water-gas shift reaction – is again innovative, and involves the use of the hydrogen (H2) yielded by the steam electrolysis step to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) for the third and final step: Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis. This step sees the carbon monoxide and additional
hydrogen (in the form of renewable synthesis gas) converted to petrol, diesel, kerosene and other base products for the chemicals industry (e.g. waxes). The feeding of the heat released during synthesis back into the process ensures a high degree of system efficiency (70 percent).
Proof of technical feasibility at industrial scale The cost of building the PtL demonstration rig was within the seven-digit range, with development costs also incurred at the various consortium members. Half of the overall sum invested corresponds with the public funding received from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

It is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to convert water and CO2 into gasoline, diesel or natural gas without many other chemicals and-or processes.
Gasoline (as you understand it) is a blend of OVER 100 CHEMICALS, which are required to compound it. You don’t just cook a barrel of crude oil and end up with gasoline, don’t believe the lies. There are MANY chemicals that must be individually produced and blended into the ‘cracked petroleum’ to actually make it. Chemicals like Octane, Benzene, etc. are there. Many additives are there (for everything from anti-knock to detergents and lubricants).
Even if you take the MOST-BASIC chemical equation for ‘gasoline’ (2 C8H18) and said ‘I can make that in my high-tech special laboratory, you would require MASSIVE amounts of supplementary catalyst chemicals just to do the conversion from water and CO2 to (2 C8H18), and THEN you STILL have to add back in all the additives that are now no-longer in the blend (since it is a full synthetic blend now).
To talk this back down from a layperson standpoint, ask yourself ‘does it make sense to make a synthetic gasoline that costs $10 a gallon to blend, when you can distill it in a petroleum cracker unit from crude, and then finish-blend it for less than $2 or so?’ In the end, you MIGHT even end up with a DIRTIER FUEL with the synthetic (when you account for all supplementary additive blendings) than the ‘old fashioned stuff’ that is far cheaper to make.
See, this is EXACTLY how you end up paying higher fuel taxes, to drive MASSIVE grant awards to rip-off research groups who promise miracles, but simply run off to South America once they’ve lined their pockets with the cash they got for free. (Solyndra, anyone?)
