CamsFormer Set To Revolutionize DSLR Photography

A new smartphone-controlled high speed triggering device for DSLR cameras – the CamsFormer high speed triggering wireless camera control – is ready to “take photography to the next level,” according to its manufacturers. If the specifications and range of potential applications are anything to go by, they could right.

CamsFormer includes 4 independent high speed trigger channels, built-in sensors for light, lightning, laser, sound, motion, and a jack for external sensors (pressure, ultrasonic, distance, touch, etc).

It includes PTZ – a 3-axis motion control (pan/tilt/zoom) facility, the ability to change camera settings remotely, and remote live view. It also uploads pictures wirelessly from the camera to the app while you shoot. An “infinity mode” lets you shoot forever without running out of camera memory. CamsFormer even has built-in image editing capability.

In short, say the makers, CamsFormer “transforms your DSLR camera into a lean mean photography machine.”

Although aimed at Pro photographers, CamsFormer is designed for ease of use and to enhance creativity. Its built-in sensors encompass light, laser, lightening, sound, and motion. There is an option to plug in many external sensors such as temperature, pressure, touch, and ultrasonic.

There are four independent high speed triggering channels that work in parallel, and can trigger two cameras and two flashes within microseconds, helping you to get the perfect pictures of events that happen much quicker than your camera could take by itself, or by using your human reflexes.

The camera control feature allows remote control of the camera itself, such as being able to wirelessly see the cameras settings or to change them from the app. ISO, white balance, shutter speed, aperture, drive mode, exposure compensation, flash settings and more can all be adjusted remotely. Adjusting cameras focus, starting and stopping video recordings and remote monitoring of a video being recorded are all possible.

The Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) function is based on 3 axis wireless motion control, allowing motorized movement to create additional creative visual effects.

One of the best features of CamsFormer is that it generates its own WiFi wireless network, so it will work in the most remote locations.

The app means the photographer can record videos wirelessly even if the camera has no video recording capability.

An “experimental tracking” feature automatically pans and tilts the camera to follow a moving subject while keeping it centered in the frame. The package also comes with its own Scripting language giving further control of camera settings and allows the potential to add new features.

The built-in light sensor can trigger your camera or flash when the light level goes above or below a certain level, or changes by a certain amount or goes outside or inside a certain range. For example you can trigger your camera when someone turns on or off a light in a room, or something enters a room changing the light level or casts a shadow for example. Or use it to simply detect if it is day, evening or night, or to read the light level in order to adjust the ISO, shutter speed or aperture when running a script for example.

The developers claim this will allow the camera to be triggered by fireworks, shooting stars, comets, etc.

The laser sensor can detect when something breaks a laser beam which then triggers your camera or flash to capture the event. The time delay can be adjusted down to micro seconds, fast enough to capture a bullet.

The built-in infrared motion sensor can be triggered by any movement in a large area. This offers a lot of potential for wildlife photography.

With the exception of small changes or enhancements or last minute engineering changes, CamsFormer is ready for production and the Kickstarter campaign should see it through the last stages.

If remote camera control is not supported for your camera, you can still use the other features such as high speed triggering and remote pan/tilt/zoom features.

The CamsFormer team tells us that “If your camera isn’t listed, drop us an email and we will investigate if its supported already or add support if necessary.”

Currently there are completed apps for iPhone, iPad and MAC computer. The Android version is currently being worked on.

The Kickstarter campaign’s aim is to bring the product to market, for manufacturing, last minute engineering changes, and possibly to design a new plastic housing to improve its cosmetic appearance.
