10 common myths about hearing aids: busted

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Many people have prior conceptions about being fitted with a hearing aid that unfortunately are either outdated or have never been true. If you are thinking of buying one soon, or are worried that your hearing is beginning to fail and are considering speaking with a specialist about what can be done, then here are some common myths, debunked…

They make you look old

A major misconception about hearing problems is that they only afflict the elderly, and that therefore wearing a hearing aid automatically ages you. In fact, hearing problems can affect anyone at any point in their lives, from very early childhood onwards. Awareness of the issue is growing every day, which helps, as does the fact that many hearing devices are now so tiny and discreet that much of the time people will have no idea you’re actually wearing one.

They can restore your hearing

In the majority of cases where hearing is failing, unfortunately the damage is going to be permanent. A hearing aid cannot fix the problem, but they can mitigate the effects, sharpening the sounds around you and making them clearer. Expect high performance from good quality modern devices, but don’t expect miracles.

They are unnecessary

You may think you don’t need a hearing aid. Your friends, family, colleagues, might agree. But the only person who will know for sure is a hearing specialist, who can conduct an assessment to discover the extent of your hearing loss, and whether a device would help you. Even if you’re convinced that your hearing loss is manageable, you might be amazed at the difference that can be made.

They are inconvenient

Modern hearing aids are very versatile – not only can you wear them around the home, to the shops, or at dinner parties, but you can get models that can be worn while taking part in sports, music performances, and in most professions, even swimming!

They are uncomfortable

In years gone by when hearing aids were a lot bulkier they would have been heavy and uncomfortable, but nowadays that couldn’t be further than the truth. A modern hearing device is tiny, and your dispenser will show you how to fit it so snugly that you might forget it’s there half the time. And don’t forget if you do have any problems in this regard you can just bring it into the shop for help.

They are complicated to use

Although the technology in hearing aids now far exceeds what was employed 20, even ten years ago, manufacturers know that what really matters to their customers is simplicity of use. If someone is wearing their device all day and into the evening for a range of activities, the last thing they want is to be continually playing around with complex settings. Comprehensive training on how to use your device is also provided by the dispenser, as well as on going support. Companies such as Hidden Hearing have a branch in many towns and cities across the UK, so wherever you are in the country advice is never far away.

They don’t work properly

Similarly to the above, no-one wants to invest in a hearing aid that is constantly in need of attention. When buying a device it is critical to ensure there is a servicing agreement in place so that any issues can be corrected promptly. This really ought to be an annual check-up, and should take into account a hearing test as well to check if your condition has worsened over the previous 12 months.

They annoy with feedback

A common inconvenience from old hearing aids was the high-pitched squealing noise caused by the microphone picking up the amplified sound. Most modern devices will now minimise this, and your dispenser can also advise on how to reduce the occurrence.

They are old-fashioned

Nothing could be further from the truth. Today’s hearing aids are packed with helpful technology, such as wireless connectivity for clearer hearing, Bluetooth functionality and ergonomic design.

They are expensive to maintain

No-one is saying that a hearing aid isn’t a significant investment, but with a good support agreement and proper care of the device, they can last for years, ensuring excellent value for your money.
