Facebook is removing Likes from deceased accounts
If you run a Facebook page for a business or organization, you may notice a slight dip in Likes over the coming weeks. Facebook is removing Likes from people who are, or appear to be, deceased.
Deactivating the inactive
The social network said in a blog post that it would be discounting Likes from profiles that are either “memorialized” or manually deactivated, which is something the company probably should have been doing all along.
[STORY: Like it or not, Facebook has no plans to add a dislike button]
The Like reduction your page might see all depends on how many ghost Likes it already has. If it’s a small page with a few dozen likes, you probably won’t notice much change. But for large corporations or celebrities, they might see their Facebook fanbase shrivel significantly.
More importantly, if you’re one of those poor souls who runs a Facebook page as part of their job – you might want to let your boss or client know about the upcoming dip in Likes and how it’s absolutely not your fault.
More accurate statistics
Facebook notes that “it’s important to remember, though, that these removed likes represent people who were already inactive on Facebook.” Your page’s Like count might drop, but it was artificially inflated to begin with.
Deactivated accounts will have their activity removed from your page, but the Like will return if the account is ever reactivated, observes TheNextWeb.
Facebook hopes these changes will give businesses and organizations a much clearer and up-to-date view of their audience.

The issue of what to do with Facebook accounts of the deceased continues to grow as Facebook’s population ages. The company appears to be taking steps in the right direction, and it’ll be interesting to see what further steps they take in the future.
