This Wearable Chair Design Lets You Take a Seat Anywhere

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

When you’re standing in those long lines at the DMV or the bank, ever wish there was a seat you could bring with you? Small, compact, folds out like an Ironman suit or something? One Japanese company is getting you closer to that wish. Archelis is a futuristic wearable chair by Japan’s Hiroaki Nishmura Design that wants to give people a seat anywhere, anytime.

The chair looks more like a leg brace that strap on to your legs and buttocks. You can walk around normally while wearing it, yet it provides support when in the sitting position. The chair is supposed to support key pressure points of the leg, like the thigh, calves, and ball of the heels. It’s also supposed to provide a full walking range of motion, so you won’t have to remove the device.

The Archelis, which translates to “walkable chair” in Japanese, was developed in collaboration with Chiba University’s Center for Frontier Medical Engineering, and Japan Polymer Technology. The design uses a combination of resilient metal and carbon to ensure its durability, while making it light enough for ease of movement. It was designed specifically for surgeons who spend hours on their feet during long operations, putting them at risk for fatigue and increasing their chances of making a mistake during these delicate procedures. But it use isn’t limited to the medical field. It could offer relief to anyone on their feet all day from baristas to factory workers, and it sounds ideal for anyone who just hates standing in line anywhere.

Before you rush to Amazon to get one of these chairs for yourself, know that it’s not available yet. The Archelis is still in the development phase and doesn’t have a price or official release date. Right now, the company is hoping to have the chair out to the public sometime this summer. It sounds like a great, innovative idea, but it’s not the first wearable chair on the market. Last year Noonee, a Swiss startup, announced their designs for the Chairless Chair, which has a similar exoskeleton model and uses hydraulics to power it. The device was tested with factory workers at car maker Audi.

It looks a tad weird, but it’s still a good idea. Certain jobs are terrible on the legs and feet, anything that offers some relief is welcomed. With smart devices like FitBit and smartwatches, wearable devices seem to be the latest trend in technology. Don’t be surprised if more devices like Archelis are announced later in the year.
