Addicted To Retail (ATR) presents: Your First Look Inside Stampd’s First-Ever Store in L.A.

Chris Stamp started his nearly-namesake label Stampd five years ago with the intent to offer modern guys a new breed of wardrobe staples, ones that brought influences of streetwear and surfing into everyday gear. It didn’t hurt that Stamp happened to be based in Los Angeles, where both inspirations have a hefty foothold. Flash forward to today and not only has Stamp’s aesthetic struck a chord with style-minded guys all over the world (and certainly us at GQ; the designer was a BNMDA nominee in 2015) and given birth to a partnership with global sportswear brand Puma, but Los Angeles has become a defacto fashion capital with big time design talents and some of the best shops in America calling the city home. Clearly, Stamp is doing something—or a lot of things, actually—right.

So it’s not really surprising that his new L.A. shop, the label’s first-ever, does nothing to knock his brand’s trajectory off course. Starting with the physical location, which, in addition to being nestled on a stretch of South La Brea that counts Union, Undefeated, Garrett Leight California Optical, American Rag, and Steven Alan as neighbors, sits on the second floor of a two-story building. No street-level windows, no eye candy to entice would-be shoppers. Instead, the store takes a “need-to-know” approach, where guys looking to get their hands on the brand’s destroyed moto jeans or genuinely cool bucket hats are meant to discover the space rather than see it all at once. And there’s plenty to discover once inside, including a new home goods line that puts a cool minimal twist to traditional items (we’re talking apple crates made out of marble).

“We wanted to create an environment that’s not traditionally thought of for a retail space,” says Stamp about the just-opened location, designed in partnership with Brooklyn-based firm Snarkitecure. It took Stamp nearly a year-and-a-half to find a space suitable enough for his streamlined retail vision. “I was heavily influenced from Danish and Copenhagen-based design along with details from Japanese architecture—that was my starting point and we took it from there.” So the brand’s black-and-white heavy, monochromatic palette became the shop’s foundation, on to which unfinished silver Turkish travertine (“We actually used the backside, you can see crystals and the erosions from the natural stone”), steel, and white and natural oak were added. The resulting space looks like a high-end boutique or an outlier art gallery—and it’s kind of both. You can pick up a new season’s haul and some dope artwork for your walls since Stamp is utilizing the space to feature the work of in-house and freelance photographers and sell their limited edition prints. And for the opening, Stamp enlisted Brooklyn artist Futura to turn four surfboards into one-of-a-kind art pieces you could probably take into the Pacific, but we’d advise not to. What we would advise, however, is booking a ticket out west to take in what Stamp calls the shop’s “really good vibes” stat.
