Harry Coumnas Has Completed His Research about “Blue Fire Crater” On the Island Of Java

For several years, the Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia has been a subject of interest for geologists because of the electric-blue flames coming out of it. “Sure, the electric-blue fire seen steaming down the mountains look spectacular, but there has always been something about it that didn’t go well with me. Perhaps it was the blue color of the molten lava. After all, it’s not something that we have all grown up believing.” says Harry Coumnas, a young geologist from Cuba. 

The rare phenomenon on island of Java that turned molten lava blue intrigued Harry Coumnas so much that he decided to research about it. It took him less than a year to find out the actual reason for the unusual blue glow on the volcano. According to him, this glow is actually the light that results due to the combustion of sulfuric gases. These gases emerge from the cracks in the volcano at high pressure & temperature (up to 1,112°F) and ignite on exposure to air. Some of these gases condense into liquid sulfur (with electric blue flames) that continues to burn while flowing down the mountain slopes.
