Why We Love Science (And You Should, Too!)

Good or bad, heaven or hell, it seems that science is something you have to love or to hate, something to praise or to fight against. Some people rail at the scientific world, stating that it is totally controlled by multinationals, others suggest a return to a more natural way of living, without scientists and their tricky inventions.

But is that true or wise? Is really science a cold-hearted monster devouring resources to serve a more or less undefined power, whose only goal is making money and ruling the world?

It sounds fake to my ears. On the contrary there are, in my opinion, many reasons to love science, or at least no to hate it.

SCIENCE CAN TRULY IMPROVE OUR STANDARD OF LIVING

Think for example of the pollution caused by automobiles exhaust gas emissions. After that studies conducted during the late 1950s and 1960s had identified cars among the major air pollutants, scientists started to face the problem, proposing smart solutions to overcome it: the 1961 positive crankcase ventilation system (PVC) has been the very first attempt to control the exhaust gas pollution, while the first emission regulation was issued in California in 1966.

Since then the automotive world has been designing more and more refined and environmental-aware engines, allowing us to enjoy the comfort of a luxury sedan or the exciting thrills given by a trendy and performing coupe, with the certainty that the milieu won’t be damaged because of our cars’ gas releases. This is why I love science: it gives us countless opportunities to live on this Earth in a respectful way, enjoying all the amazing available technologies in total awareness of our planet’s needs. This is just an example.

Science is of course much more and covers every aspect of our daily life, without being good or bad itself; it just provides us tools for having an easier, healthier and more comfortable life; how we use these tools, making this world a heaven or a hell, it’s up to us.

SCIENTISTS UNDER A BRAND NEW SUN

But what is the true meaning of science, what is the very core that drives a scientist to observe, study, test, fail perhaps, and try again and again until the goal is reached, the mystery explained, the formula solved? Isn’t that primal urge, that explosive blend between curiosity and needs, that has allowed mankind to evolve constantly, from the very first staring at the sun in a reverent astonishment to the designing, building and igniting an artificial star?

Indisputably science pour in constantly in our daily life: besides the big research projects run by renowned institutions, millions of scientists worldwide are studying, researching and testing, spreading as well the result of their studies through essays and articles; TV offers plenty of scientific programs and the television itself is a highly refined scientifically developed product.

You may even say that scientists are common people: in fact, being a scientist doesn’t mean that you have to walk wild-eyed with a crumpled white coat risking to be hit by a car at every crossroad! Also, one of the biggest cultural hoax is that you have to think like a man to be a good scientist; no need to refute this statement, we all can be excellent scientists, men and women, as brilliantly shown by Marie Curie and more recently by Margherita Hack.

If you love science, and you should really do it, if you have a deep knowledge about some special subject, why not to share it? Besides contributing in the scientific debate, you may inspire other people in many unpredictable ways!
