Sand spheres are usually ooids. Evidence: this webpage shows that only ooid sand contain spheres among all kinds of sand. Moqui marbles and Martian blueberries are much larger than 0.5-mm ooids. Ooids show many different colors, but moqui marbles and Martian blueberries do not. Ooids contain nucleus, but most moqui marbles and Martian blueberries do not. Ooids are formed by microbes. Evidences:

1. Geological Process Does Not Form Ooids.

2. Figure 1: Ooids Form in Dense Concentration.

On March 10, 2016 (Sol 1278), NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity acquired the above microscopic image near Naukluft Plateau, Gale Crater, Mars. Ten red arrows point to less-eroded ooids. These ooids are smaller than 1 mm across. Note the density of the spheres and the spheroidal particles. If they were formed by geological process, what geological process concentrated them here? Geological processes, such as wind or water transportation, disperse rather than concentrate such particles. The spheres and spheroidal particles are ooids, which usually form in dense concentrations.

3. Figure 2: Sand Spheres Do Not Result from Abrasion.

In NASA’s description, the spheres resulted from abrasion during transportation.The explanation comes from no physical evidence. Above photo shows concentration of spherical and spheroidal ooids. Wind or water does not concentrate such particles.

In view of the above, sand spheres are usually ooids made by microbes.

Note 1: Oncoids are similar to ooids, but much larger. Oncoids are formed by microbes, too, according to Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oncolite .
