Got Your Sketch On?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One of the basic tools-of-the-trade for creative types the world over is our writing sticks, a.k.a pencils, chalk, crayons, markers and the like. I don’t know about you but when I want to lay down some lines my go to permanent marker is a good ole ultra-finepoint Sharpie. I like how it forces me to commit to what I’m drawing. Also because I’m often trying to depict an object’s topology (fancy design-speak for “shape”) or developing a patch construction scheme before beginning a CAD surface model, I favor the consistent line width sharpies produce.

Sharpies come in variety of nib sizes and array of colors.

Customizing objects via Sharpie’s is all the rage,  from custom kicks to cars.

So I’m always on the lookout for creatives using this versatile art medium. And today I got an unexpected treat. I got a chance to have an impromptu ID’er to artist sketch-off! I’m telling you, I’m always excited when I get to do what I love namely, meet budding creatives and design! Enter Dino Osegueda a 33 year old local sharpie artist. Dino has been living right under my nose in our tiny Village of Lawrence MI and I hadn’t a clue. When I walked into our local library I had no idea I’d have to get my sketch on.

“Sharpies work nice for exploring color and shapes. My theme at the moment is hearts and crowns. Also in each piece I include a positive word like joy or peace. When I meet somebody, I give them one of my sketches!” I feel good about sharing my art!” – Dino O.

As I scanned the room my eyes locked on Dino who freely held my gaze and offered a smile. To my delight I saw he was sketching and with Sharpies! In no time I went from admiring his pieces to sketching myself. We were in a full-blown sketch off feeding off each others energy! After a spell, I slid my sketch over to Dino and said “Do it up brother. Give it your touch!”

My sketch attempts at capturing Dino’s theme but adding a little 3D sweetness to the forms. Dino started putting his touch to the sketch on the right.

Dino explained that he loved to explore forms and color. He said hidden in every piece is a positive word like “joy” as well as, iconic forms such as hearts and crowns. And best all, he said “When I’m done, I gift many of my art pieces to those I meet.” Then to my delight, he sliding his true-to-life sharpie sketch over to me! I’m think’n my man Dino Osegueda has got a good thing going and I wish him all the best!

Our sketch on complete, I had to strike a pose with the artist!

Moral of the story? Always be sketchin’. You never know when you’re gonna have opportunity to throw down some lines!

BTW, in case you’re not aware the month of October has been dubbed Inktober. And for a shot of the good stuff, I’d suggest you hop over to Instagram and check out  Scoro5 (Scott Robertson) and Sketchadaycom (Spencer Nugent).

Keep sketchin’
