Snapchat Imitates Netflix; Plans on Creating Original Content

Recent job listings by Snapchat reveal that the company is looking to hire individuals who could help create original content, similar to that on Netflix. The company has actually been innovating quite a lot for the past few months with the Snapchat Spectacles leading the way. However, it is still trying to imitate some of the bigger names within the genre by growing as something more than a platform for filtered videos and photographs.

Snap Inc. or the parent firm has ideas of competing with a standard television in the near future. This concept, if materialized, will give way to original shows from the company. Quite recently, we could get a peep into the released job listings where the development managers seem to be looking for original content creators. Some of the topics mentioned within the job description include pilot reviews, pitching ideas for new shows and ability to work with producers.

If someone is willing to read between the lines, the job description requires the candidate to work in close association to the production team— handling both unscripted and scripted projects, from time to time. This could go from a pitch to even a pilot episode of a forthcoming program.

These indications are enough to presume that Snap Inc. is willing to try its hand deep into the entertainment industry and after winning over a lot of hearts with its hardware-centric product— the team is pretty upbeat about the current concept. However, not just content creation but the company is looking to purchase original content from suppliers— still unknown to our sources.

The growth of a photo based chatting application is indicative of the popularity of these entities. With the likes of Instagram growing up the charts and imitating Snapchat is certain aspects, the playing field looks even for the likes of Google Duo, Allo and many more applications. While some users are still conventional and prefer using kik online instead of the application, even this messaging app has the potential to grow beyond expectations if a similar route is followed.

Snapchat is a prime example for the likes of Kik, WhatsApp, Viber and a lot more players who are still cementing their online presence.

While some critics are taking this move with a grain of salt, Snapchat’s media-centric intrusion is actually going to intensify the competition. The company argues that this approach is nothing out of the box and a general progression to the ‘Discover’ feature— already existent on this app. This feature actually allows companies to publish new stories over the platform. Snap Inc. believes that delving into the media-centric world will not hamper the efficacy of the platform but only be an extrapolation of the existing service sets.

Snapchat’s presumed arrival will surely give the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon a run for their money.
