How Lawyers Work: Brendan Kenny, Trial Lawyer, Persuasion-ist, and Plain-Language Advocate

In this week’s edition of How Lawyers Work, we talked to Brendan Kenny. Brendan is an attorney at Blackwell Burke PA in Minneapolis, Minnesota practicing in the areas of toxic tort, products liability, and other complex litigation. He is also a Lawyerist contributor.

What apps or tools are essential to your daily workflow?

Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Kanban board, and email workflow based on Getting Things Done.

What does your workspace look like?

It alternates between being a mess and being organized, depending on how long it’s been since my last Kanban brain dump.

How do you keep track of your calendars/deadlines?

Using my firms ProLaw calendaring that shows up in the Microsoft Outlook calendar, my own deadlines in the Microsoft Outlook calendar, and notes on my Kanban board.

What’s your coffee service setup? (Other beverages are fine, of course, but you should really be serving coffee!)

We have coffee in the office that is brewed daily. I drink a lot of it. After hours, the firm keeps a Keurig machine stocked with coffee. I drink a lot of that too.

What is one thing that you listen to/read/watch that everyone should?

The Trial Lawyers College Podcast. (I listen to the Lawyerist Podcast, but that goes without saying.)

What’s your favorite local place to network or work solo?

The Caribou Coffee in the Campbell Mithun Tower in the Minneapolis Skyway.

What are three things you do without fail every day?

I do some non-legal reading, I spend time with my wife and four children (ages 6 to 18 months), and I laugh.
