This Zelda-Inspired Nintendo Switch Mod Was Forged Out of Stone and Wood

When it comes to ingenious video game mods, Ben Heck usually has just about everything covered. But with the arrival of the Nintendo Switch earlier this year, plenty of DIY modders and hardware hackers have been coming out of the woodwork to show us their own interpretations of Nintendo’s latest device. And when it comes to Nintendo, few games are as iconic as the Legend of Zelda.

More recently, Spanish hardware modder MakoMod let his love for all things Zelda shine with the Sheikah Switch Mod; his own interpretation of the Switch console based on inspiration from actual items in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild universe. In other words, if you’re a diehard Zelda fan, the mod is quite possibly the closest you will have ever come to playing a Zelda game as if the console came straight out of the game itself.

Forged out of stone and wood, the mod is not just a well-executed piece of hardcore video game fandom, but also an interesting material study in what a video game console could be:

Features According to MakoMod:

Everything is hand-made. No CAD or laser cutting has been used in the planning or in the making of the mod

Aged pine wood has been used for the front and the back of both Joy-Cons: hand cut, carved and painted

Different green paints and epoxy putty have been used to recreate the moss

Brass has been used for the contours of the Joy-Cons: hand cut and folded

Synthetic leather has been used for the frame of the handheld and features golden embroidery

Automotive-quality golden paint and synthetic varnish have been applied to the console

Uncoordinated twinkling LED lights recreate a blazing fire within the rock, behind the Sheikah Eye

All stone-finish has been made using only first quality epoxy putty and acrylic paints

Console remains fully playable, in a comfortable way. But as a piece of art, it is intended for display purposes

One-of-a-kind: no more units or variations will be made
