This ‘Laputa: Castle in the Sky’ Minecraft Recreation Took Years to Complete

Studio Ghibli could be considered the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney Pictures. If you haven’t watched at least one of their heartfelt children’s films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, or Spirited Away, please stop reading this and do that instead (you’ll thank me later). The movies have as much impact on Japanese pop culture as Disney films do in the west, and their fan base is just as big.

As proof of this, YouTube user Mocchi Hajikura has been devoting the past few years recreating the floating castle from Studio Ghibli’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky in Minecraft. You know Minecraft – the insanely popular video game by Mojang which is even used by schools to teach students subjects ranging from reading to design.

While this seems like an impossible feat in survival mode, where you have to collect resources on your own, Mocchi has made use of the game’s creative mode to draw on an unlimited supply of blocks to fuel his anime fan art.

And below is his most current video which was uploaded on September 28, 2017. This one uses the film’s music and some fancy production effects to give an anime feature feeling just like the movie.

You’ve seen giant Minecraft builds before, but those which take years to complete and revise are few and far between.

His channel may not have a lot of videos, but this only proves he spent more time fine-tuning his creation than capturing it on film. Nevertheless, Mocchi’s content is definitely a sight to behold.
