Ford just created a new company for their self-driving cars project

We all know the car industry is investing in autonomous cars, which are considered the future of transportation. Ford Motor Company is now joining the list of companies which invest in self-driving cars, like General Motors’ Cruise Automation and Google’s Waymo.

A new division

Ford did more than just releasing a self-driving car, so they created a new division and company, dedicated to autonomous vehicles, called Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC. The new company’s goal is to speed up the development of self-driving cars by focusing on the progress of technology in this domain. Ford is planning to invest $4 billion in the autonomous cars project, to support both the production and the research of self-driving cars. Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC is designed to take funds from outside sources as well, so there might be lots of entrepreneurs who will be willing to invest in Ford’s new self-driving cars.

While Ford is now investing in their new division, they are not going to abandon traditional cars, which are still going to be available for purchase from the company, as well as multiple dealers, such as Jennings Motor Group. According to their CEO, Ford is now preparing to cater for a market of both self-driving cars and manual driving cars.

Another important goal of the new company is to implement the latest IT technologies in the self-driving cars, to enhance their performance. Ford is planning to simplify charging and change ownership experience, to create a new type of car and car owner.

Competition on the rise

Ford’s announcement comes after their rival, General Motors created a new division, Cruise Automation, dedicated to self-driving cars. Moreover, General Motors announced they want to be the first company to produce self-driving cars for the masses, without a steering wheel nor pedals, by 2019.

The future of cars

The biggest car manufacturers are now investing in driverless vehicles, which are expected to change transportation forever, as well as the automobile industry. But how safe are these new cars? This is a long debate, especially since a woman was killed by a self-driving car in March 2018.

This event contradicts the very core of the autonomous cars, which are developed to create a safer world, where there are no car accidents due to human error. The driverless cars which are now on the roads seem to have their own set of flaws, which makes them just as dangerous as regular, man-driven cars.

While self-driving cars bring a lot of advantages, such as less traffic congestion and less gas emissions, they also have their own drawbacks, which might not be overcome in the next years. Until car manufacturers find a way to solve all the problems of these new gadgets, one must rely on the regular, man-driven car to move around.
