Practical Steps of Malware Check and Removal From Your Website
Recently, the world began to recognize the dangerous consequences of various forms of network vulnerability. In addition, cybercriminals can exploit these vulnerabilities to obtain confidential and personal data from an ordinary web user’s computer. What countermeasures can be taken to address various network vulnerability issues?
How to Check the Website for Malware
If you own a site the code of which contains a virus, then you risk losing almost all of your visitors. Search engines label such sites and inform users in the search results that the site may threaten the security of your computer. Of course, nobody will enter a site with such a “black mark”.
How to determine if your website was damaged by malware?
1. Check the website for viruses with online scanners: to check your own site for viruses or report IP address that sends you malicious emails, follow this report IP link.
2. Find out how the website operates in different browsers and devices: one of the signs of infection is a redirect. It happens when users see another resource if entering your site. An infected site can normally open on the PC but visitors will be redirected to a phishing page on the smartphone.
3. Check the search results: search engines automatically scan sites for viruses. They mark infected resources with a gray color and a notification of a warning.
4. Find and disable the doorways. They build-in their content on the site. To check the site for doorways, enter the query “site: mysite.com” and review all search results. If you find pages that do not match the theme of your site, these are doorways.
How to Find and Remove Malware
When there is no doubt about the infection, the malicious code must be found and removed. For this, follow the tips below:
1. Check the HTML and JS Scripts
Malicious scripts are often added to the source code of a site. Check it for extraneous JS scripts, iframe inserts, and spam links. If you find them – delete.
2. Check the Date of File’s Modification
If you know when the site was hacked, then the malicious code can be found in all files that have been changed since then. For example, a hack that happened a few days ago can be detected in the PHP scripts that have changed over the past seven days.
3. Analyze the Upload / Backup / Log / Image / TMP Directories
These directories are potentially dangerous since they are usually open for writing. In most cases, shell scripts are built into them, so they infect the site files and the database. Such directories need to be checked for possible malicious PHP scripts regularly.
4. Find Files and Folders With Unusual Names
Open the site directory. Find files and folders with non-standard names and suspicious content and delete them.
You can also use online scanners to automatically check site files for viruses, shell scripts, redirects, and doorways. They usually detect up to 90% of all malicious scripts on an infected site. So, why not do it right now?
