Tiny Fundulus can teach us something about giant Mola

Let the graphic tell the tale today
as the odd, giant, ocean sunfish, Mola, gets a little make-over based on the tiny top-minnow, Fundulus.

Figure 1. Tiny Fundulus, a top minnow, bears enough of a resemblance and proximity to giant and strangely proportioned Mola to help understand its derived skull morphology. What was labeled a ‘ligament’ (the red arc is homologous to the tabular (red arc) on Fundulus. This is how evolution works.

All new insights and hypotheses,
like this one (Fig 1), are still subject to change as the fish subset of the LRT undergoes a lot of ‘housekeeping.’

These two
(Fig 1) are not sisters in the LRT. Lagocephalus (the pufferfish) is one of several transitional taxa between them as reported earlier here. Sometimes certain traits skip a generation or two – or perhaps more taxa might reveal a more direct lineage. The loss of the pelvic fins and circumorbital ring (= postorbital homolog) in Mola finds convergence in several derived clades.
