New Emeroleter paper promotes old myths based on taxon exclusion

Bazzana-Adams, MacDougall and Fröbisch 2024
put Emeroleter (Fig 1) in their µCT scanner.

Always good to get more precise data.

Unfortunately
these three paleontologists were caught spreading the myth of the Parareptilia (Fig 2), which they described as “a taxonomically and morphologically diverse clade of basal sauropsids with an exceptional fossil record across the end-Permian mass extinction.”

This invalidated clade is SO diverse it includes mesosaurs and pareiasaurs. Not good. Sauropsida = not Synapsida was also invalidated by the LRT.

Figure 2. From Bazzana-Adams et al 2024. Colors added here. Blue = outgroup pre-reptiles. Green = Lepidosauromorpha. White = Archosauromorpha. Yellow = scrappy taxa.

Unfortunately
it gets worse in sentence two of their introduction, “The clade is generally considered to be the sister group to Eureptilia, the clade that includes all living reptiles, though other recent work has recovered the alternative position of Parareptilia nested within Diapsida and some analyses recover Parareptilia as paraphyletic.”

Eureptilia = not Parareptilia, is likewise invalid.
Diapsida is not monophyletic. That skull type developed twice in the LRT.

Figure 3. Subset of the LRT focusing on Emeroleter and its interrelationships.

The traditional clade,
Parareptilia, is not recovered when a more taxa were added to the large reptile tree (LRT, 2319 taxa, subset Fig 3) because clade members split apart. That makes a clade invalid, a myth, traditionally supported by academic referees and editors.

The LRT minimizes taxon exclusion by including so many taxa.

We paleontologists are stuck in the past.
That’s what we do. We stick to the past. That doesn’t mean you can’t be up-to-date with your taxon lists. Build your own LRT. Don’t borrow = trust someone else’s taxon list.
