Build A Homemade 5/8 Wave CB Antenna Awesome Antenna
Here is a cranking antenna for the CB band and 10 meters.You can build your own 5/8 wave antenna with 3 -8ft long sections of hollow aluminum pipe.What I did was take a hacksaw and cut the top of each one about half an inch,cutting down on one side .You need three different diameter sections as they will go inside one another ,then some hose clamps to tighten that up.To talk on the CB channels make it 22 -1/2 feet long.Then you need 6 feet of a good stiff gauge copper wire and make a ring.Then Mount that on a 2×4, then attach that to a mast with U bolts.The center conductor of your coax cable is slid along that wire to get your best SWR reading.Some radios have it built in or you need to buy an SWR meter.For a ground plane, I used 1 cb whip antenna 8 and a half feet long or you could also use copper wire for that too.Probably better using three though.Attach the ground of coaxial cable to the bottom end of the 6ft ring.Of course you want to tape it up good or use epoxy after it’s tuned good,you don’t want water getting in the coaxial cableThat pretty much explanes it.I dusted the local competition using this,it has some decent gain.

are these still made? i use a 1977 avanti av-170 5/8 wave and i am in love with it, i bought it new still in the box for $100.00

You got that right, they are one of the best ground plane antennas for 10/11 meters, they work great for either band. Can’t go wrong there.
