Pee in a bottle. If you want to save on water, flush your toilet as little as possible. Keep a bottle next to the pot and pee in it. If you have guests over, be sure to ask them to pee in the bottle too. When it’s full, dump it out in your compost pile before placing it back beside the potty.
Put your freezer on a timer. Set your freezer on a timer to cycle on and off every 12 hours and cut the cost of running your freezer in half. Just be sure to pray that the meat stays frozen.
Shower somewhere else. Have a membership at the gym? Shower there to help save on water and energy. If your guests spend too much time in the shower, shut the water main off.
Dumpster dive for food. Yes, really. Find a hot spot behind a restaurant or bakery, time your visits just right and score things as they’re tossed out. Be sure to taste your finds before you serve, just to be sure they’re okay.
Cook on a makeshift stove. Gather some wood, start a fire and voila. A free solution to cooking or heating up dinner.
Eat wild edibles. From greens to grape leaves, you can find lots of tasty treats readily available in your backyard – or someone else’s. Pick away from the path too, to avoid greens that have been peed on by animals.
Use old appliances. Or not at all. Just don’t upgrade them. Ever.
Keep everything unplugged. Only plug in electronic items when they are in use to eliminate phantom energy use. Better yet, just don’t use them.
Track everything. From your daily morning water meter reading to how much you spend on food, utilities, gifts and more, be obsessed about tracking your every expenditure.
Remember the best price is always free. So what if your bedroom is ugly and you’re using the same curtains that came with the house? If they were free, that’s what matters most.
With a little creativity and a lot of commitment, you can become an extreme cheapskate too. While your friends and family may think you’re crazy, you may be able to save a million, literally.
