Rifles And Guns For Small Women (Informative Videos)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

This subject is of interest to me, since I am only 5’1 and 95 lbs. I have watched the Youtube videos where the small ladies shoot guns way too big for them and they end up on their bums.. The kick on some of the rifles and pistols are just too much for us females, who are small of stature.

I didn’t want to be that woman and since I hadn’t shot a gun since I was 17, I thought I’d research the subject and see if there was any more recommended than others, for small ladies.

Here’s what I found:

Cheryl Current who shoots semi professionally gives you her insight on buying a pistol for the first time. This video will give you an idea of what to look for in a handgun, and what Cheryl looks for in a handgun. Everyone is different, so spend a lot of time in choosing one that fits your hand, not for one that is pretty or popular. You should not have to manipulate or move the gun in anyway to get the right amount of your trigger finger on the trigger. If you do, it’s probably not the gun for you.

According to Remington the Remington Model Seven Youth Rifle in 7mm/08 or .26.

Remington says,”  If you are small—say, 5’2” or less—this rifle will fit you much better than a full-sized gun. The stock is an inch shorter than standard, and the barrel is only 20 inches long. It’s a synthetic-stocked gun with dull-finished steel, and while it isn’t pretty, it is very, very effective. $684;

A Woman’s World recommends the S&W 442 Airweight Revolver, for the beginner.

Womans’ World said, “ Simple first impression of this small compact S&W revolver. This gun is good for purse and pocket carry by both men and women. Its light weight and fun to shoot but does have a heavy trigger.

Another one for us ladies is the  Model 597™ Pink Camo

Made by Remington and is retailed as a ladies gun. (If the Pink Camo didn’t give that away.)

Remington’s details about his rifle:

The Model 597™ is easily the most advanced autoloading rimfire rifle ever built, and the most technologically advanced breakthrough in autoloading rimfire rifle technology in 35 years. The difference starts with our proprietary bolt-guidance system, which features a unique set of twin tool-steel guide rails for better stability, feeding reliability and greater out-of-the-box accuracy.

The Remington Exclusive Mossy Oak® PInk camo Model 597 will turn heads with the hot new look, then proceed to make jaws drop with the astounding ability to punch tiny groups in fast-forward. The Mossy Oak Pink camo Model 597™ has a 20″ carbon steel barrel and TruGlo® fiber-optic front sights.

Key Features:

  • Bolt-guidance system features twin, tool-steel guide rails

  • Offered in textured finish synthetic stock

  • Non-glare matte finish

  • Patented, 10-shot metal detachable magazine, 8-shot for magnum

  • Last-shot hold-open bolt for added safety

  • TruGlo® fiber-optic sights

These are just a few suggestions for the beginner. First and foremost, safety first!

An AR would be perfect for you…. Or an 22 pistol

Both my wife and I are firearm instructors and we both compete so this is a subject that I feel competent to comment on. There are many points that I absolutely agree with. For example, (1) there is no right gun for everyone; (2) Make sure the gun fits you. The portion discussing rifle size relates to “pull length”. Production rifles are set to certain “standard lengths” which will not be suitable for a small frame person. This can be corrected by having a custom stock or there are after market adjustable stocks (similar to those found on ARs) for common makes such as the Ruger 10/22. My wife works with a lot of new female shooters and most show up with a 38 revolver similar to the S&W 442. The problem is the pistols have a 12 plus pound trigger pull. Coupled with the recoil as a result of the short barrel makes this type of gun very difficult to shoot. There is nothing inherently wrong with this type of revolver as long as it limitations are understood. We always suggest that new shooters (male or female) stick to 22s until they have some experience. This raises the most important point. Training is the most important component. And not just the basic course. There are many sources for practical shooting and it is advisable to take advantage of them.

I went through these same issues recently with buying my GF a pistol and rifle. The problems that seemed to be the biggest issues at hand, were the weight of the rifle and the grip size of the pistol.

Lucky we were able to find a new Springfield XD w/M Factor, in a .40 cal. (http://www.the-m-factor.com/html/home.html) This pistol comes with a few different switch out grips for different size hands.
The big issue was finding a rifle with enough knock down power that didnt weigh more then she could carry for a long time. This issue led us to CAA Tactical (http://www.caatactical.com/viewCategory.asp?catID=376) This platform allows you to turn you handgun into a small rifle platform at a low cost, you gain a 100-150 yard accuracy and the weight is no more then you camelpack. Good luck

I don’t have any personal experience with the Roni carbine system, but the MechTech Carbine Conversion Unit (CCU) is an awesome addition for a 1911 or Glock owner. The MechTech actually gives you a longer barrel, 16.25″, for better muzzle energy and greatly improved accuracy down range. The unit is a little heavy when compared to a plastic gun (AR) but still manageable for most shooters. I can manage 3″ groups at 100yds with iron sights shooting ball 235 grain 45acp. The customer service at MechTech is top notch also.

My wife loves the AR for her rifle of choice. When she started shooting handguns she fell in love with the Walther P22. Once she became comfortable shooting I started trying her on different calibers that are better suited for self defense. At 4’11 and 100lbs she is now shooting and carrying a Colt commander 1911 in 45acp. The single action 1911 provides plenty of length for her trigger finger. She feels the recoil is lighter in the commander than in a full size but I think it just feels better since the grip is smaller and fits her hand better. The Walther Pk380 is also a great choice since it is on the same frame as the P22. My wife felt that PK380 kicked harder than the 1911. The PK is very light weight verses the heavier (all steel) 1911. It all comes down to what you feel comfortable with but I don’t trust a 22 to stop an attacker coming after my loved one.
