5 Things You Should Never Feed Worms - and Want To Get Together By Marjory Wildcraft

Working towards that vision of ‘homegrown food on every table’ I am setting up some experiments with different growing methods like hydroponics and aeronautics that will serve the urban and suburban needs.

Of course I’ll be writing or videoing about the different systems as we go along.

One of the four systems I’ll be comparing is called a “Garden Tower”  It is essentially a 55 gallon drum fitted with a tube in the center which has a composting worm farm.  The system continually feeds the plants growing in holes made on the sides of the drum.  Yes, I’ve got a video coming out on that very soon.

John Fry of Garden Towers of Austin wrote the directions to setup the garden tower which included some very simple advice I thought I would pass on;

5 Things To Never Feed Worms;

Meat
grease
oil of any kind (even vegetable oil)
citrus
or pineapple.

Here is why.  Worms breath through their skin so oil is very detrimental.  If you’ve been raising worms and have any other tips, feel free to post them here at http://www.growyourowngroceries.org/5-things-to-never-feed-worms

On another note, want to get together?  This Fall I’ll be attending and teaching at two different conferences where we could meet up.

Herbalismo! (October 24th – 27th) in Central Texas is an amazing gathering of herbalists which I’ll be attending and presenting at.  But really, I am coming to learn.  They’ve got an incredible lineup with Rosemary Gladstar, Matthew Wood, Nicole Telks, Ellen Zimmerman…  The list goes on and on of really talented people in the herbal medicine field.  Go to http://www.Herbalismo.org to register.

And hey you Floridians!  November 2 – 3 is the ‘Life Changes Be Ready’ Conference in Lakeland, FL.  I’ll be speaking about growing food – and offering a special breakout class on how to process small game.  Yup, I am going to demonstrate how to butcher right there in the conference center of all places.  Oh yeah, that reminds me, I do need to check on how to get rabbits on the airplane…  Here is the link to get registered for the expo http://www.lifechangesbeready.com/website/

I hear Capt’n Dave will be at the Florida event.

See you there too?
