Emergency Kits and Your Mindset

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

How many times do we have to
watch others suffer the consequences of a disaster before we realize that
perhaps we should consider how we would fare in a similar situation? In spite
of where your political sympathies lie, common sense should tell you that
environmental conditions are changing and affecting us in ways our grandparents
never had to cope with. At least not with the sort of frequency we see today.

So how prepared are you for
an emergency? I recently read an article on this site  about what to do when you get lost in the
wilderness. I couldn’t help but think about the similarities between being lost
in the wilderness and finding oneself ‘lost’ in the midst of a disaster.
Surprisingly, the mind struggles to process both situations using the same
formula.

When a person realizes they
are physically lost in the woods, they attempt to seek out anything familiar.
This can often lead to disastrous consequences as the person will strike out at
a feverish pace, draining precious energy and without regard to safety, hoping
to find something familiar, perhaps a landmark that will help them recognize
their place in the world. In the attempt they will often forego eating,
resting, and most of all, thinking. Unless they mentally come to grips with
their situation, they will often become a statistic, usually succumbing to
exposure or some avoidable accident.

It is a scary scenario to
find oneself in, but one that can be prevented with preparation and training.
The same goes for any
emergency or disaster situation we find ourselves in closer to home. Like a
lost person in the woods, when faced with an unfamiliar dangerous situation,
our minds rifle through a number of scenarios trying to find something
familiar. Unless we’ve planned ahead for such a scenario, we may be in trouble.
Studies show that even a small amount of mental and physical preparation can
greatly increase our ability to cope with unfamiliar situations.

So get prepared

In emergencies, too often
individuals wait for someone to tell them what to do. Even the government has
warned us that to be prepared to take care of ourselves for several days in the
event of a natural disaster or other type of emergency. Have you heeded the
warning?

Any number of sites,
including this one, will help you with putting together the essentials for
survival. But I will speak of the importance of having useful first aid
supplies on hand. You can find first aid kits nearly anywhere, from corner drug
stores to medical supply stores.  Your foreseeable needs will dictate the size
and content of the kit. Since this will be a basic staple of your emergency
gear, it deserves more than a passing mention.

The most important part of any first aid kit is your knowledge. Without the
knowledge to treat a wound or the proper mindset to deal with an emergency, a
first aid kit is next to worthless
. In a natural disaster medical help
may be days away, so keep in mind that in an emergency your first aid kit may
become your only aid kit. Therefore, instead of just chucking a kit into your
emergency gear bag and calling it good, get familiar with how to use it. In an
emergency, knowledge is your best asset. Training yourself now in basic first aid
treatment will boost your confidence to deal with an emergency later.

Preparing ahead of time for
an emergency will give you the edge you need to make it through safely. By
preparation and planning, you are essentially outfitting your mind with a
mental map to help you navigate the unfamiliar territory of an emergency.
Instead of being hopelessly lost in such a situation, you will find you’ve
acquired the right gear and the requisite confidence to deal with a disaster.
