Growing Up Healthy: Tricks To Growing A Great Organic Garden

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Gardening can be very complicated, when you look at it more closely. Choosing to garden organically means learning about many details, such as your soil’s acidity or what sort of insects live in your garden. If you are new to growing vegetables, then growing organic may take you a bit more time to learn. Be sure you learn to be a pro by using the tips laid out below.

TIP! Planting organic strawberries is a great way to encourage your children to get involved. Small kids enjoy picking fruit themselves out of a garden.

When growing organic plants indoors, it is important to consider the amount of light that is available to them. If your home does not let in sufficient light, then consider getting plants that thrive in low-light situations. If you want to grow plants that need a lot of light, consider using artificial lighting.

As the seeds sprout, they’ll need less warmth. Your seedlings should be moved away from any heat source. Additionally, remove any plastic films that were on your containers. This will keep out warmth and humidity. Watch the seeds so you can know when you do this.

TIP! To keep your houseplants happy during the day, your thermostat should be set anywhere between 65 and 75 degrees. Indoor plants grow best at these warm temperatures.

You need to make sure you are very efficient when working in your organic garden. If it takes you thirty minutes to find a needed tool, then you are doing something wrong. Have all of tools you will need for the day before you head out your garden. When you are finished, put them away neatly for the next time. Get a tool belt if you need to, or a pair of pants with a lot of pockets.

Pine Needles

TIP! Have your gardening tools near you to minimize the time spent searching for them. Wear pants with multiple pockets or use a toolbox or large bucket.

Do not overlook the benefits of pine mulch for your garden. There are many common acidic plants that prefer acidic soil. If this is the case, use pine needles to mulch your beds. Sprinkle the pine needles over your beds. As the needles decompose, they add to the acid level in the soil.

If you sell or use organically grown produce in a commercial setting, you should communicate your commitment to natural growing by becoming certified. This will result in generating more sales and creating a loyal customer base.

TIP! When working in the garden, try to work as efficiently as possible. Don’t waste time searching for lost tools.

While gardening organically requires more work than gardening with the help of chemicals, the rewards are worth it. Chemical giants claim miracles, but those miracle crops come at a price to whoever eats the produce.

Your watering schedule should flow perfectly with the seasons, yet be adjustable according to climate. There are many variables of how much water your plants need including soil, light, and outdoor temperatures. As an example, leaves should not be watered in humid, warm climates else leaf fungus could occur. Instead, water the roots only.

TIP! Pine is a surprisingly good source of mulch. Some plants need acidic soil to grow properly, because of their own acid content.

Add mulch for healthy soil. Mulch acts as a protective covering for the soil. It protects the plant roots, keeping the ground cool on a hot summer day. This will ensure your soil stays moist by reducing the time in which it evaporates. As an added bonus, weed growth will be stunted.

Rotate where you plant each type of plant each year. For example, if you usually plant corn in one area of your garden and flowers in another, switch which plant is planted in each section. Fungus and disease are more likely to affect plants if they stay in the same location for long periods of time, especially if they belong to the same family. These diseases can build up in the soil, reinfecting your plants the next year. By using the crop rotation method, you will be able to ward off disease and fungus naturally.

TIP! Coffee grounds can benefit many types of soil. Coffee grounds contain many of the essential nitrogenous nutrients that plants are able to use.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
