Going Green: Money-saving Tips at Home You Probably Didn’t Know

A Guest Post by Gilbert Bermudez

“Saving money for the winter days” is one of the money-saving quotes we often hear. And why not? Savings are important. It’s money you can use for when things don’t turn out the way you expected them to. Emergencies have a way of taking that sense of control right out of your hands and if you’re not careful, you might find it hard to get that control back.
But do you always need an account? Is there any other way you can save? There are, of course, plenty of ways. Look around your home. There are a bunch of things you can save shekels on, if you just try hard enough to pinpoint these things.
Look through the following list for a few tips:
Use a Bike: A No-Gas Vehicle
Let’s face it, you spend some bills or swipe a card when you fill your car’s gas tank. To start saving, you could try finding other alternative vehicles to drive. You may ride a bicycle when you go to work or someplace else alone.
Bikes are inexpensive, gas-free vehicles—the use of which will slash down not just on your fuel bills, but also provide you with health benefits as it is a form of exercise. You don’t have to deal with annoying traffic jams because it’s easy to go through tight spaces. Parking is not a problem too because there are parking spots available for bikes, with few people using it so you’re sure to always have a spot free. Just don’t forget to put a bike lock so thieves don’t run off with yours.
Turn Off the Heat
A bigger portion of your electricity bills comes from thermostat usage. Adjust the thermostat temperature of your water heater and you’ll save about $450 and cut 215 pounds of emissions. Big savings, right?
Turn Off Red-eyed Monsters

There are a lot of red-eyed monsters you can see around your house. Not literally creepy monsters living under the bed but appliances around your house with steady, red lights on when they go on standby. If you have a computer or laptop, don’t just put these to sleep when you’re not using them. Appliances and devices still consume energy even in sleep mode. Turn off these things when you really don’t need them to conserve energy and trim down on your power consumption.
Use Energy-saving Light Bulbs
The ambiance provided by incandescent lights can be romantic, but you’ll definitely fall in love with LED or CFL lights more when you see how these can shear off a portion of your electric bills. Compact Fluorescents or CFL can last up to 8,000 hours and consume only 13-15 watts. Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs consume only 6 to 8 watts while incandescent lights consume up to 60 watts. See the difference? LEDs can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower electric bills, as a result.
Creating a List for Your Grocery Shopping
This will prevent your impulse buys. Note down all the stuff you need at home and prevent buying things you don’t really need. Extra stuff to buy means extra costs. We know it’s hard to resist temptation sometimes, but instead of using your money to buy things you are happy about but don’t actually need, it would be better—and more ideal for you—to just learn to save your shekels. If your willpower is weak, try for a way to ensure you won’t get to spend whatever money you have at hand—either ask someone else to keep it far away from you or put it in a place where your access to it is limited.
Here are just a few money-saving tips you can practice at home. Do them and you’re bound to discover a few more along the way.
