Virus killing Soup Really Works

One of the first things I do when someone in my house comes down with a nasty cold or worse, THE FLU is to get a pot of soup going. Many mothers from around the world know this trick: a bowl of hot soup not only comforts, but actually helps a person recover quicker from a cold. Why is this?

Studies have shown that you can use soup to treat a cold. Soup is helpful in treating an illness in several ways:
A) the steam from the hot soup helps clear sinus and chest congestion.
B) The liquid broth helps to flush your system of toxins and helps prevent dehydration.
C) If your recipe has garlic, the antiviral properties of garlic help get rid of the virus. Add some cayenne pepper and it will clear your sinuses and get your blood flowing to speed healing.
D) The hot liquid helps to ease the pain of a sore throat.

I found this great recipe at Eat at Home. You can try this recipe next time you or someone you care about is feeling under the weather. Or if you’re like me, you can use this recipe as a starting point and change things around to suit the needs and tastes of your family.

The ingredients to make the stock for this recipe are:

One whole chicken
15-30 cloves garlic, minced or crushed
1 Tbs. salt
3-4 fresh thyme sprigs & fresh rosemary sprigs
About 1 tsp. of Cayenne pepper
Ground black pepper

Put all the ingredients in a pot and cover with broth or water so the chicken is completely covered. Simmer the soup until the chicken falls apart. Remove the chicken and the twiggy parts of the herbs and set aside.

At this point, I put vegetables in the broth. At my house, we are partial to onions, carrots celery and a couple of bay leaves. De-bone the chicken and put the meat back into the pot to simmer for a couple of hours.

The wonderful aroma of the simmering soup will comfort anyone feeling under the weather. No bowl of chicken soup is complete without homemade noodles so I throw some in the pot 30 minutes before serving and PRESTO! Everyone in the house soon has a hot bowl of soup to warm their tummies and their hearts.

While there are beneficial properties to each individual ingredient, there have been studies that have shown while the exact compound is unknown to be most effective.
