Burn Coffee Grounds in Your Backyard, the Results Are Amazing (Video)
(N.Morgan) One of the major complaints about being outdoors during the summer are bugs. From mosquitoes to wasps and bees, these pests can ruin a good time and in some cases cause painful bites or stings that can lead to allergic reactions.
Many of us have tried every thing to make the bugs go away without much success.
In this amazingly simple life hack, Thierryoutdoors explains his idea of burning coffee grounds to drive all insects away.
Insects, especially mosquitoes, can transmit diseases and viruses, such as in the recent Zika Virus epidemic.
Commercial repellents also tend to have more than a few harmful chemicals that can cause other health issues from breathing them in.
The solution? Believe it or not, coffee grounds.
The Environmental Protection Agency says coffee grounds work as a very effective natural repellent that will keep many insects – including mosquitoes, wasps and bees – away.
Many insects have a very strong sense of smell and coffee grounds possess a strong odor when burned that drives insects crazy.
So how do you use them?
First take your used or fresh coffee grounds, put them in a bowl and cover it with aluminum foil. Leave this bowl in a dark, cool place and let the grounds dry completely.
Then, place the grounds (either in a bowl or on a sheet of foil) on a flat area outdoors and burn them like you would incense. If you’re indoors and trying to keep mosquitoes out, open your windows.
If you’re using this method at an outdoor gathering, just leave the bowl burning in a central place.
Still too many mosquitoes plaguing you? Add some fresh bay leaf to the coffee grounds and burn them together.
If it’s a windy day or the area you’re trying to de-bug is large, you may wish to place as many as 5 of these burning bowls around to make sure the area is well covered.
In the video below, Thierryoutdoors shares this trick he learned in Lebanon.

Doesn’t work so well in Australia.
The smell brought the water buffalo in from the swamp and rats soon followed, which caused the buffalo to stampede, knocking down the bullpen fence sending our bulls through the house yard gardens and veggie patch at full tilt. The chooks and cattle dogs took this opportunity to scoff down everything they could fit in their mouths or carry off from our BBQ and the ducks have all snuck in the house watching tv again.
Will go back to firing an occasional scattergun blast to keep the mozzies, wasps and vampire bats away, thanks anyway.
Starbucks gives away free bagged used coffee grounds , thanks for sharing btw “
Well, maybe I’m the only one who noticed. The guy said insects don’t like it because “smoke is fire, fire is danger…etc” ANY smoke will do. He also stated that it’s UNUSED coffee, freshly ground. He’s likely using coffee only because it burns like incense, slow and smoldering. Find something else, coffee is expensive.
