Trash those Tags

My mother has them. Her mother had them. Just about everyone I know has had to deal with the nuisance. To be honest, I have no idea what causes skin tags. My guess is that it’s somehow related to HPV, which so many of us have, whether we know it or not–but I’m probably wrong. Some folks believe skin tags are just a part of moving forward in time and space, otherwise known as growing older. But, I’m not convinced. I remember having one when I was a kid that had gotten so bad it had to be removed by the doctor. Skin tags can be unsightly, but sometimes they can be pretty painful, depending on where they are.

I can say that over the years, I have noticed more of them popping up. After noticing a fresh crop on my neck, exactly where my necklace sits, I knew I had to do something about them. Several weeks before, while visiting my mother, the topic of skin tags came up. She showed me some concoction she bought in one of her catalogs for more than $30. It was a mere half ounce bottle, and she was curious about what was in it. The ingredient list was completely foreign to me. It didn’t have recognizable chemicals in it, but the manufacturers decided to use the scientific names of the essential oils because—as I usually find with companies seeking to mystify herbal remedies and make a massive profit. After a brief sniff, I recognized the major constituent immediately: tea tree oil. But, again I was lost since the aroma was a distinct cross between tea tree oil and tar. Regardless, it wasn’t working. My mother had been using it for several months without positive results.

So, I went home thinking about a skin tag treatment. After my own became irritated, I went to the books and came up with a 2-fold treatment that works. It took a little more than a week for the collection of tags, about 5-6 small ones in the same area, to completely disappear. The tags seem to dry out, fall off, and the base actually does disappear. Visually, I can’t tell where the tags were. When I had the tag removed by the doctor decades ago, a small raised scar remained behind. I used this treatment on that area and that raised patch also disappeared. After I noted another small tag on my neck reappear last week, I applied the treatment once and the tag vanished in a matter of hours. Granted, I caught my tags while they were small. I recently gave my mother the treatment, so I’ll have to follow up with her and see how it’s helped her. She’s trying to get rid of a tag she’s probably had since before I was born.

The first step is to use an acid based treatment. Don’t freak out. The acid I’m talking about is apple

cider vinegar. It’s a strong astringent and is the only downside to the treatment, but I think it’s the key. It dries out the tag and allows the tag to drop off. Make sure you apply it carefully, using a cotton swab to get the treatment on the tag itself. If you use it too liberally on the surrounding skin, a slight irritation can result. I’m prone to eczema and I noticed when I was applying the treatment liberally, using a cotton ball, that I began to develop a dermatitis. As soon as I switched to a cotton swab and applied it only to the tag, the irritation went away. This stage of the treatment will sting briefly. Give it a few minutes to dry before applying the second stage oil treatment.

The second step is an oil designed to heal the skin and moisturize the area. Apply the oil after the astringent dries completely. Since the oil is healing, apply it you’re your fingertips. Don’t use a cotton ball or anything absorbent to apply it, since your oil will be absorbed into the cotton. Refrain from using make-up, other moisturizers, or other creams, ointments, etc. on the areas you’re treating. For larger tags, you may need to use the treatment for several weeks to months before seeing results.

Use the treatment 2-3 times a day. In the first 2 days of treatment, I used the full treatment every morning upon wake-up, about 6 hours later in the middle of the day, and again at bedtime. When I noticed the dermatitis develop, I scaled that back to twice a day, morning and evening, and still had great results.

Use only high quality essential oils. Don’t use fragrance oils. If you can get organic oils, use them. I only use Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils. They’re the best in the business and won’t break the bank.

Step 1: The Astringent

Into an opaque 2 ounce bottle add:

30 drops tea tree essential oil
15 drops oregano essential oil
10 drops of patchouli essential oil
10 drops of basil essential oil
7 drops grapefruit essential oil
6 drops frankincense essential oil
6 drops of sage essential oil
4 drops myrrh essential oil
2 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil

Fill the bottle with apple cider vinegar and witch hazel in a 1:1 ratio (half apple cider vinegar, half witch hazel). Cap tightly and shake to combine. Make sure you label this otherwise you’ll forget what it is. Refrigeration is not necessary.

Step 2: The Oil

Into an opaque 2 ounce bottle add:

10 drops oregano essential oil
8 drops sage essential oil
8 drops frankincense essential oil
6 drops patchouli essential oil
6 drops basil essential oil
6 drops grapefruit essential oil
1/8 tsp. sea buckthorn oil
1 tsp of tea tree essential oil
1 tsp evening primrose oil
1 tbsp. rosehip seed oil
1 tbsp. jojoba oil

Add the essential oils first and then top off the bottle with castor oil. Again cap tightly, shake to combine, and label this too otherwise you’ll forget what it is or confuse it for another concoction. Again, refrigeration is not necessary.

When I first created this treatment, I used basic boston round bottles without any applicator. Since I’ll be making a new batch, I’ll probably opt for using a dropper since it would be much easier to apply.

Since I created this treatment and used it, there are a few updates.

First, my mother used this exactly twice and when her 40-year-old tag didn’t magically disappear, she stopped using it. Also, the two times she used it were spaced by a week. So my mother’s lackadaisical approach and her aged tag aren’t good measures.

Second, totally unrelated to this treatment I developed a pretty scathing bout of eczema on my neck which necessitated using a steroid treatment when a) all my home remedies failed to work in a timely fashion and b) the eczema began creeping steadily upward. After only a few steroid treatments, the eczema was subdued. The downside? The tags came back with a vengeance. Since I was able to get the eczema symptoms to subside, I’ve been going back to the herbal remedies to get to the root of my eczema. Until I have that under control, I can’t use the skin tag treatment again without having another eczema flare.
