Solar is worth the money you put into it in the long run. My camper has a 1.5ft. x 1.5 ft. solar cell on the roof that gives a kickback to the deep cycle battery used for the 12V wiring system. When the battery finally failed and I brought it in to get a new one the dude at the battery place was very surprised because the battery was 12 years old. He said for that sort of use in an RV the life of a battery is typically around 3 to 5 years.

um point of order, those EMP events you spoke of, will take out that inverter for the solar panels too! How convenient that you didn’t mention that, huh??

There is this thing called the “antenna effect”. The infrastructure and /or devices with the longest wires get taken out first. Devices with short wires or no exposed wires are less vulnerable.
An EMP event has too many variables to say that it will take out everything including inverters. The major factors are:
Type: Thermonuclear 2 stage devise or highly enriched uranium.
Altitude
Geographic location as well as magnetic field at that location.
Its common knowledge that a large enough EMP event will take down most if not all nuclear reactors which will then most likely melt down. So a nation our group that would likely launch a EMP attach will probably not take down the entire grid. I suspect Southern California tops the list (highly populated, one reactor).
I think a massive solar storm should be of more concern since these are unpredictable.
So there was no fault on the part of the author to mention that the hardware will be destroyed. You just don’t know that.
My take on comments like these is that someone is trying to cause people to not take action. it communicates something along these lines:
“Fools. your best efforts will fail based on [ unproven techie esoteric theory passed off as fact].
oops. Left out one factor determining the severity of the EMP event:
Yield: megatons / kilotons
Bought one about three years ago for about $1500. ..batteries lasted about 6 months. Now i have a dead charger in my garage waiting for $200. worth of batteries.
Hope they improved in that department…
this is just a solar panel (and quite small wattage by the look of it)
Possibly A standard gel cell or deep cycle battery (lithium..I have my doubts)
probably enough to keep the lights on all night with the tv for a couple of hours…
will run many 5amp devices like phone chargers at least as this is what the tricky wording is saying
refrigeration ….forget it your fridge would suck it inside out overnight

just not the claims made by this article..for value $1000.00 is probably about right including all the markups
