SYDNEY—Under the blue, star-lit ceiling of Sydney’s renowned Capitol Theatre, Shen Yun Performing Arts played its final curtain for the Oceania leg of its 2012 Tour on Sunday May 6.

Among the appreciative audience was Fillipo Radrizzani, restaurant manager of the world-famous Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney. He saw the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company for the fifth consecutive year.

“The show today is very, very nice,” he said. “It is, I think, the fifth time that I’ve seen it. Every time that it came to Sydney, I come and see the show.”

New York-based Shen Yun is renowned for its classical Chinese dance, folk and ethnic dance, its orchestral blend of Western and Eastern instrumentation, unique animated backdrops, and gorgeous costumes. The show gives audiences across the globe a taste of five millennia of traditional Chinese culture.

Shen Yun was created in 2006 by a group of top artists with a passion to revive China’s divinely-bestowed heritage, almost destroyed after 60 years of communist rule, the company website says. Legends from Chinese folklore together with themes of modern day China are dramatized through dance, song and music.

Mr. Radrizanni particularly enjoyed the beauty of the dance Lotus Leaves and the humour of Joyful Little Monks.

“The lotus dance was really colourful and full of energy and the other one was funny, so it was a nice twist on the tradition,” he said.

He rated the show so highly he bought tickets to last Sunday’s show as a wedding present for his friend who “really did enjoy it”. He added that he was “100 per cent sure” he will be back next year.

“Oh, yes, it’s always very interesting, it’s always changing, it’s always something new—the show is very eclectic so I really like it for that reason too.”

Altitude Restaurant at Sydney’s Shangri-La Hotel was awarded ‘Restaurant of the Year’ and ‘Chef of the Year’ at the 2010 Australian Hotels Association National Awards of Excellence. The restaurant also won ‘One Hat’ by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2011.
