NASA Operation IceBridge - Eerie , Remote Image

In this more recent photo release (above) from NASA’s Operation IceBridge , we get a true reminder of how remotely isolated our researchers have become.

Operation IceBridge, a research study effort by NASA , involves studying the movements in glaciers, ice sheets and sea ice in the Antarctic. One of the more emotionally gripping images is perhaps this eerie, albeit interesting, photograph of the research outpost. The outpost South Pole Station is located at Earth’s geographic South Pole.

The South Pole Station has dozens of scientist working at one of the most deadly and hostile locations on our planet. Current temperature only reached -39 degrees Fahrenheit with a windchill of -60.2 F.

Looking at the image, it is hard to imagine that humans are actually working within the dark impressions of the photo.

I could not help but recall images from science fiction films. Especially, The Thing‘s original counterpart The Thing from Another World !

The NASA DC-8, temporarily grounded, has resumed flights.

The image was taken on Nov. 4 by DC-8, a NASA research aircraft that flies out of Punta Arenas, Chile, with its home base at the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale.

“On the transit back we flew directly over the South Pole!,” NASA Goddard geophysicist Scott B. Luthcke said on the space agency’s website. ”The mission was clearly a success with mostly clear skies and a full data collection from the instruments.”

On November 15 th , NASA will be holding a new brief to share some of their research findings (from the latest flights).

The National Science Foundation explained that the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station sits at our Earth’s axis , atop a constantly shifting continental ice sheet that is several miles thick. The research facility is probably one of the worlds most remote outpost stations. The station lies at the heart of a continent that is cut off from the rest of the globe by a circulating Souther Ocean current.

Antarctica is the coldest, the highest and the driest , windy continent – and the least hospitable to human life. By sheer paradox, these are the exact conditions that make the South Pole a unique scientific laboratory for the diverse climate study.

There is great hope the IceBridge study will solve some of our in depth questions in regard to the origins of the universe and the status of our global climate changes.
